Average driver is probably only going to notice that (from what i know of the differences) that the early cars were stiff and bouncy, and you wanted to visit a chiropractor for spinal correction after every drive, while the later cars were stiff and actually well damped so you didnt need a chiropractor.

springs rates dont matter when it is either comfortable or uncomfortable.

Absolutely agree; both sides should be considered.

In the context of cars, I would say folks in their 20's and 30's will physically be able to tolerate harsher cars, and have more stamina/tolerance for the toll of driving a sports car than in their 50's and 60's. Luxury cars? Well, hard to say.

For example, while the typical Porsche buyer demographic is over 50, I don't see many of those typical buyers at the track. I do see them in parking lots at cars and coffee. While everyone buys their cars for their individual purpose, I overspend on cars to drive. Many folks do buy their cars for the explicit purpose of going to cars and coffee weekly.

My physical fitness at 50+ won't be anywhere near when I was making payments on a car I truly could not afford.

This is why BMW can sell a car like the i4. 0-60 in ~3.5 seconds. Adjustable suspension that goes from reasonably firm to soft. Super sticky tires available.

I cannot imagine boredom with retirement. In English alone, there are more books than I can ever read. I'm just starting to get into Chinese light novels. Those are addictive. Then there's TV and movies. Then there's actually writing something myself, plus hiking, swimming, gardening, driving, improv, theater, standup, and volunteering. I look forward to getting this work yoke off my neck in a few years, around when I hit 50. Interestingly enough, travel isn't super high on my list of things I wanna do. I've been to significant parts of Europe and the US plus a bit of Asia. The more I travel, the more I realize that I just wanna be in Hawaii.

Mike, are you transporting drugs as you go from track to track? It's the CSG 401K!
Since you read a lot, go and read up on actual real life retirement situations. There are so many situations where people work or volunteer to overcome boredom or just to have camaraderie with friends and such. Trust me I doubt you can just read books for 40 years. Finding a purpose is key and so many loose it in retirement. I get it, as a working person it seems ridiculous because not having to work seems like the greatest thing. But as you get older things change, and health wise it’s not like you are 20 with all the time and money in the world. You need a plan for what you will do in retirement.

+1

i've seen a few old people go through exactly this.

it's why i keep encouraging my grandfather to keep going to the local thrift store to volunteer to check things in and repair them. my grandmother on that side did the opposite. she'd sit in her chair every day, without the tv, without reading, just silence. and ask herself how she felt every day. and when that's all you ask yourself while living in the silence, the answer is rarely 'good'

I've been reading for about 40 years now. I can see another 40 being just fine. I still haven't gone through most of the classics, not because I don't like them (that varies) but because I just don't have the mindpower left for such serious pursuits. I listed eight activities off the top of my head. I'm sure I'd be able to come up with more.

As for purpose, well, I think that's one thing humanity just doesn't have. I'm a big philosophical fan of the push and pull between Shelley's "Ozymandias" and Shake's "Sonnet 18". Everybody understands the first, but few truly get the second. Between them, I think you can find the great question to ask, and by my answers above, you should find where my answer usually falls.

I've been reading a lot more books in my '13 parked under a shade tree. It's quite nice.
With a library card and e-books on the phone I can go through 2 or 3 every week.

I'm not parked under a shade tree when I do it, but my '13 and I average about 60 audiobooks a year on our commute thanks to a library card and my phone.

Yes. Because nothing lasts and you're never going to be as great as Shakespeare, you may as well go with what you got.

I drove yesterday in anger. Was much fun. I also took my daughter to try and teacher her stick. Was not much fun. Many, many stalls. Eventually I said, "Go watch like 40 youtube videos on how to drive stick, and then we'll try again."
