I think I am doing pretty good. I have lost less than $10,000 if I trade my BRZ in to Subaru. My "Guaranteed Trade-in Value" (more than likely a gimmick like Scion's Pure Pricing) is $19,900 for my BRZ with 16,700 miles.

Aside from that, I knew going in, that new cars lose money as soon as you drive them off the lot.

What I would like, is for the car to get discontinued, have a movie come out that shows how awesome the car is, and then boost the resale value like crazy.

See: Toyota Supra and The Fast and The Furious.

It depreciates fast because men want virgins or close to it for such an intimate relationship. I can't imagine what some other guy did to my baby on those first 5000 miles.. No thanks. This is a special car and I think most people buying it want it new or want a major discount for not getting to deflower her. It's not the same with a corolla or something. I think it only shows how awesome this car is.

There is also something to be said for experience.

I was counting on Scion's "Pure Pricing" to prop up resale but that seems to have been abandoned this year as dealer's panicked with release of the 2014 Monograms with more content for a reduced MSRP compared to 10 Series sitting next to them on the lot.

The same is about to happen with Monogram resale as the 2015's are released next month. My dealer has three Mono's on the ground now with college, military and APR incentives. No doubt they'll be discounted soon and in turn resale will also crater.

Toyota has produced a few significant new cars that when combined with Federal and State incentives have been financial home runs after short holding periods of 6-12 months. I've bought/sold 14 Prius and Camry Hybrids and averaged over $7K profit each, timing resale to gas price. Those were the good old days.

Interesting to note, a used car dealership offered $20,000 trade-in for my 2013 scion with 21,000km. I'm in Canada btw.

As side note in 2007 I sold a stock 2002 RSX-s with 230,000km for $8,500, in one week.
In 2011 I sold a 2003 Rsx-s with 225,000 for $5,500. Good news for some, bad news for others. Im going to assume these two imports are going to/have similar resale value.

Here in down under australia a gtho ford falcon signed by Allan Moffat or a holden torana/commodore signed by Peter Brock are now worth their weight in gold.
It will be interesting to see what the value of 86/brz/frs signed by Tetsuya Tada will become.

Every car has a "plateau" value - where it just sits for most of it's used life. Like 996 porsches are about 24k, 350z's are about 14k, regardless of age/mileage within reason. I suspect our cars will drop and eventually hang out from 12-16k until they have well over 100k miles and/or are just tattered.

Buying one near this range would basically mean free ownership as long as you didn't ruin it or put a zillion miles on it.

When the import tuner market started to blow up ~15 years ago, not everyone knew what they were doing. It was trendy for your car to not be stock, and very few people thought about the long term... so people were physically modifying things, especially before aftermarket parts were massed produced. In the beginning before companies were flooding the market with aftermarket parts, people were cutting stock springs, having custom exhausts made, etc. So a lot of mods were done that weren't easily reversible or without their lasting negative effects, especially once people started doing weird paintjobs or putting headlights/taillights from different cars onto theirs with a lot of bondo and patience. Plus since the market was in its infancy while a lot of those getting into it were fairly young, all of that shortsightedness combined with changing laws made things like law enforcement and smog tests a huge pain in the ass in the end.

Nowadays, even the younger crowd who is the same age I was when I first got into modding at least knows what they're up against. Sure, there are some who do things to the car anyway that will end up having similar lasting negative effects (i.e. the Hellaflush crowd), but they at least have the knowledge available that we didn't have, or had to learn the hard way. It is for this reason that I haven't modded a single car since the Honda I had 10-15 years ago.
Newer cars may not be as cheaply modified as the cars from the 90s, but most buyers still don't want someone else's project. While there are better quality parts available now, people still take short cuts when it comes to modifying their cars. Even though cars like the 350z, S2000, and RSX are only 10 years old it's still getting pretty difficult to find stock clean examples for sale. Most of the twins that I see for sale by owner are either salvaged or modified in some way. Sure most of the mods are reversible, but I personally wouldn't want to be changing out exhaust pieces or peeling off plasti-dip on a car that I just bought. Other performance cars sell for more when stock, regardless of how new they are, I don't see why the frs/brz will be any different.

I plan on holding onto mine until I can't keep her anymore (baby) or the 10 year mark, when it is time to pick up something else. At the same time, I'm concerned about this car turning into another honda civic. It's gonna suck if I can't get more than $5k for it when I sell it. I guess only time will tell, but with the way this thing is falling in price, I'm voting that the 13's will be worth about $15k in a year

doesn't matter to me, I plan on keeping it.

i have an appreciation for people who take care of their cars. the other day i saw a "showroom fresh" GMC Syclone

it was perfect, no scratches, non-faded paint, it was like it rolled straight out of 1991.

resale value has never been an issue with me.

I remember when I was in high school dreaming about the 07 STI's, I was excited to see their prices drop like roaks the first two or three years but try in find one today in canada for under 25,000$…
I actually hope that people rice the S**t out of them because then if I keep mine mainly stock it will be a diamond in the rough and I can charge a fortune for it! At the end of the day the BRZ/FRS are yardsticks for its segment in the auto industry and that is worth a premium in itself!
