Because some people mod for the sake of modding, and others are actually buying full R&D/tech support/customer service with their product.

What about the other group of people who just want the most bang for their buck? This is just a very old design of a simple series of metal tubes welded together and not a new piece of fancy technology here.

I didn't know there was such a huge difference between a $300 and $1200 header on this car. My $350 DCsports header is still on my other car and has done fine for the last 10+ years. Does that extra $900 we are spending in this case get us 3 hp more than the $300 header?
Also, If I needed any tech support or spectacular customer service for a simple bolt on part, I wouldn't even begin to think of modding my car either if that was the case.
Of course I also see no need to spend $1000 for aftermarket headlights and $2500 for a set of rims on a $25k car either so maybe I'm just a fuddy duddy cheapskate.

i have a Tsudo Catback, bought it used for $150 and the fitment is horrible! sounds good, but terrible fitment

Catless header makes most from bolt-on mods. Often it may also lessen or take out need to install all the rest of exhaust mods. Hence imho why not get best and enjoy all the driving time one enhancing most, as price difference is still small number compared to car costs or usual total mod budget or fuel burnt in few years of driving and so on ..

If you want the most bang for the buck, you'd sell this car, buy a $3000 240SX, and mod it with $20k of parts so that you can get more bang for the buck.

What's the difference between a $500 DIY computer and something prebuilt for $800-1000+?

- fit & finish
- quality control
- customer support
- R&D
- brand
- location of manufacture
- exchange rate
- distribution structure
- other intangibles

At the end of the day, each customer has their own expectation(s) and as long as the product meets their expectation(s), there's no need to belittle the difference between a $300 header and a $1200 header.

You know I meant with putting money into this car on the bang for the buck. Besides, if I wanted bang for buck and speed was all that mattered, I'd buy a used motorcycle for a couple thousand that makes these cars look like they are standing still. No matter how you look at it, the headers for these cars are highly overpriced for what we are getting. These cars aren't very common so it's understandable to be paying a slight premium due to rarity but these $300 headers are putting the big boys in check.

Funny you mention DIY computers as that is probably really the total opposite of what you were trying to make a point about. I have been building mine and for everybody in the family for the last 15 years and have had no problems with any of the issues/differences you mention and I always have a faster computer with better components than a prebuilt for less than half. A monkey can figure out how to piece a blazingly fast decent computer together that puts prebuilt ones to shame. Of course I can't weld my own header and expect a charge for that skill but bending over and paying triple for silly reasons just doesn't make much sense. The main difference is the stickers that come on the expensive computers and I suppose getting to brag about having a $1000 header falls into that same category like having an alienware sticker on the case.

Women buy knock off Louis Vuitton bags on Ebay for a fraction of the real thing and the ones who paid the big bucks get mad at that. I think the same applies to this situation. Early adopters of the latest technology such as new smartphones also get hosed too. The FA20 is 5 years old now and the time for prices to come back to Earth is now and evidently happening already.

I was not talking about performance PCs, I was talking about the average desktop PC for home or office use. No one is talking about prebuilt boutique PCs from Maingear, Origin, etc (all places I am friends with, BTW).

I was mostly referencing the fact that you pay more for a prebuilt computer, all things considered, because they are essentially tested for each other and have a lot of secondary qualities built in to the price. Small things like incompatible memory or a bad BIOS can be the difference between a 30-minute PC build and a 3-week RMA wait period. I can build really fast PC tomorrow for half the price of a prebuilt computer, but that is also assuming I will never have to RMA any components of it. Motherboards are the worst offender in computers, because all of the manufacturers have shitty customer service that make you jump through needless hoops. Source: I used to work in that industry for a long time.

Going back to the topic at hand, header materials can be cheap and yes, it should not cost more than what you think is a fair price. But you need to really stop looking at it in terms of "3 times the price for the name only" because it simply is not that way.
