The driver risk groups are totally separate from the car model risk groups. That is why I pay $400 a year while an 18 year old dude next door with 2 accidents and 12 tickets pays $6,000.
Might it possibly be a historic thing?

Say in the 70s or something when things were less data driven and a bit more on the empirical, there might have been more truth to this 2+2 insurance stuff and the "legend" lived on sort to say to this day?

OP here

I am very surprised that to this post right now, less than 13% say they hate the rear seats and wish they weren't there while a staggering over 30% say it's a big purchase factor!!

Car journalists should stick it and shut up about these rear seats. They are very functional. They've been very functional for the Porsche 911 for decades and they're not disappearing as a strong case of an example. This is bad journalism in my opinion.

Car journalists are generally ignorant idiots with a personal agenda.

Kinda like me.....

It has always been data driven. It was just done by rooms full of people not computers.

I like the practicality, but since I never put people back there, only stuff, I would prefer it if they maintained most of the space but moved the rear wheels forward about 10". This would eliminate the possibility of +2 seats due to wheelwell intrusion, but would shorten the wheelbase for more nimble handling while also improving the weight distribution from ~54/46 to 50/50.

I really think they should keep the 86/BRZ as 2+2 models but add shorter-wheelbase 2-seaters as described above to the lineup. They could call the Toyota the 2000GT That would be close to the perfect modern sports car for me.

Fixed roof + bigger/more utility. A 2-seat version of the 86 wouldn't be "a Miata"...

Hard to argue against a cool picture like that one

Looks like this thread has run its course

One last comment I wanted to add which forgot to earlier

When I say I like throwing things in the back seat, it's not only for extra cargo space. It's that those back seats are very well concealed and most would not even think that there were back seats there let alone having something worth stealing.

This for me personally is advantage over putting things in the trunk where they're less handy or putting them on the passenger seat where they are very visible and very enticing for thieves.

Thanks everyone who participating. Discussions like this thread are always fruitful.

So nearly 90% of respondents either love or like the back seats... I would say Toyobaru made the right decision by including back seats.

many US states use your credit rating as a far too large factor in your auto insurance.

I generally don't care about the rear seats, took them out a couple years ago.

I like the rear seats. I have given rides to my smaller friends and they fit just fine. Some prefer to take their shoes off and get comfy.
