Sorry, my bad. I meant the second part about the "90% of the parts", but I now realize that you were also referring to an OEM style setup. That's good info though.

FORESTER XT/FA20DIT OIL COOLER RETROFIT

Can run with Grimmspeed intake space tolerances and can be done for under $200.

Here's the real kicker- you can add a Setrab to the setup and have essentially the same oil cooler as people who spend $500-600 on them for around $150-200 less if you spend a little time thinking about it and gathering the right parts.

what now Ck?!

How do you add an external cooler to the OEM FA20DIT cooler setup? Two sandwich plates?

Yes 2 plates i saw done somewhere, however two many connectors and points of failure for me , personal opinion.

I like the look of the integrated radiator\oil cooler. Simple install , minimum hoses and connectors, oil cooler will act as heater in cold climate, no need for thermostatic plate as its coolant to oil like oem cooler, no extra oil radiator at front to get damaged, oil in end solid tank attached to radiator.

question would be can it cool oil enough, it should be better than oem cooler setup due larger heat exchanger area.

^^ 100% agreed on too many failure points. I'll have to give that Skunk2 one a better look, I really wanted a Robi Spec one, but I can't buy what someone doesn't want to sell.

If you want to blaze a new trail, you could use the OEM cooler block and run a dedicated coolant loop through it. In the event of a failure all you would lose is coolant and would essentially default to the stock cooling.

Of course now you'd need to have a secondary water pump, reservoir, and thermostat but it would be unique!

I have the Perrin cooler but if I did it again I'd go with JR. I believe the only difference between their NA vs FI kits is the mounting bracket. The JR has more cooling capacity than Perrin.

Another option we've discussed was OEM cooler, between the 2 radiator hoses, with an electronic temp switch controlling an in line electric water pump. You take it out of the engine coolant loop and take advantage of the under-utilized NA radiator but lose the heater ability. Someone in our club has this minus the switch and gets good results.

I like simple
how about running an oil cooler radiator in series with the coolant line before the oem oil cooler. ie use the radiator to pre cool the coolant (not oil) before it get to the oem heat exchanger.

unlikely to need thermostat as coolant will be 95c input, and no pump or switch ect required

With all that extra volume, surface area, distance, and small openings might still need auxiliary pump

Ayo I'm not sure how well it can be done- I was thinking get custom hoses made/make myself with AN fittings for the setrab, and regular female (open) ends for the male connectors at the sandwich plate. @steve99 can't one just add the setrab to the loop, where the setrab is in-between the coolant tap and OEM sandwich?

Why run two?
