Shift at 3.1k, right there is where the valley of death is! :/
Up shift takes it to ~2k 2-3k is best mileage for accelerating.
if you REALLY wanna mess around then shift at 7k and keep it 6-7k rpm.

Let's try to have some optimism here. It would be very embarrassing and worthy if M3 falls to a 2L pocket rocket.
Reality trumps optimism...

I know what the OP is talking about. I am new to MT too, so when I short shift into second in my BMW, the Siennas and Camrys tend to dust me too. Especially here in LA, every stop light seems like a race... sheesh...

I should really get out of this forum. I have been banned once before, so this nick doesn't have a lot of posts, but I have been here so long that I still come back out of habit....

O.o
what rpms are you shifting at?
try shifting at 3k consistently.

Yes, 3k+ rpm is key. But before that there is the question of how I engage first gear. Sometimes I don't realize I am engaging at around 1.5k rpm or less, and that takes a lot longer to get going.

There is also the issue of variance of the speed/feel in how the clutch engages when the car is cold vs hot, and there is a *slight* amount of engine float when cold, but when hot the engine speed drops like a rock, so there is less time to shift.

On the upside, the drivetrain efficiency and responsiveness, plus the deceleration coming to a stop, makes it all worth the learning curve!

I personally don't suggest shifting much past 3k.
I've been driving around a bit and I can feel the torque dip so I constantly shift at 3k.
Regarding when I engage I can't really say .. maybe consistently around 1.8k, I never checked.
I personally don't find too much engine speed drop because I never Fully let off the gas until the shifter is right about to go into the 'socket'.
That's when I do a soft reversed blip where I let off the gas and clutch and then get on the gas immediately .. may not be the best way but for some reason I find myself doing this.

this is why i still keep my honda around...my EG can pretty much make an E46 look like a kid in a power wheel...well not that bad, but its faster an any E46 m3 I've raced so far ...(not saying it'll beat a 1000hp activeautowerk M3 but its quick )...E92 M3s however are a bit more of a competition, I've taken a couple of stock ones but any bolt ons and I'm don't for heh

When I drive my FR-S tho i feel as i don't need to prove anything haha, its weird what a honda makes you do...with vtak yo

would you like to explain why not?
I'm willing to experiment different methods, I've found this to be the method that I've stuck to.

This whole thread was junk from the start.. OP wanted to see IF he could keep up with a M3 from a dead stop by not touching the throtle very much. NO.. you cant.. in fact you cant keep up from anything from a dead start if they are putting their right foot down more than you are.

Bonburner - I think you are talking about just smooth "common" shifting correct? Not trying to smoke anyone just get up to speed from a red light.

Then some people are talking about REALLY accelerating from a dead stop, which is obviously going to be higher than 3k rpm..

No one is talking about the same thing, like I said - useless post from the start.
