I was strongly considering waiting for the 2015 GTI before I bought the FR-S. The car looks amazing, the specs look great, it's much more practical as a hatchback (and the FWD was more practical for snow, being in IL), and the supplier discount would have been nice. However, I decided to go with one of my dream cars.

If I was making plans for a family though, I'd be getting a sporty hatchback. GTI, Mazdaspeed3, or Focus ST.

Ooorrr..... save your pennies for the Focus RS that is LIKELY coming to the US! http://kinja.roadandtrack.com/2016-f...998797/+travis

I have a 03 accord sedan, and when I put coilovers and summer tires on it... That is exactly what got me into the "handling over power" and ultimately led me to buying a BRZ. I still have my accord, although i gave it to my sister, I DD it when I want because we have opposite work schedules

Yea man, I was planning to track mine for fun but I ran into a bunch of brake issues because the first few years I didn't know anything about cars. I never changed the brake fluid. and the car was almost 10 years old I ended up replacing both front calipers because 1 seized. Then before the track day I was planning a rear was seized and destroyed the pads.

Live and learn.

seems like the new GTI is not getting the praises compared with the previous gen.

I would suggest getting a used STI hatch, or if you want room...jetta TDI wagon...

I would find it hard to believe the new GTI engine doesn't blow the old one away.

It's been a while since I've been in the older GTI's but my friends new one is fantastic. VS the twins, its a substantially more luxurious option, if you want to give up handling and great road feel.

We recently took it up on some roads similar to the Tail and it kept up pretty well. He had to cross the lines a little to keep the pace around turns, but he'd reel us in on any straight and exiting corners.

Keep in mind with everything that people say on this forum will have some or a lot of bias towards the twins.

The GTI is not a RWD coupe. It is a FWD Hatch that is designed for 20-50% of the small car market. The FRS is designed for driving enthusiasts. It's a very different car for a very different buyer. If the FRS doesn't fit your needs anymore, trade it in. Make sure that you drive your wifes car there. The difference between the twins and the GTI is blatantly obvious and will make the adjustment that much more difficult. Without the, i-just-got-out-of-my-twin experience, driving the GTI is quite fantastic for a car designed for the masses (i'm considering the golf in this range since it has the 1.8T now).

I think the GTI is in the shadow of the new R. most enthusiasts are looking at the R over the GTI.

This isn't your old GTI. From the reviews I have read there is no torque steer on the Mk7 GTI. I really want to test drive one.

Virtually no torque steer in my MK6 GTI. Even with a stage 1/2 tune, torque steer is fairly tame.

Yeah this seems to be the case. Interesting because the MK6 Golf R was viewed as a bit of a disappointment. I think a lot of the excitement around the MK7 Golf R is due to expectations of how the car will respond to a tune.

IDK, most of the reviews of the new GTI are really positive. The GTI is not going to feel as raw as a FT86 or even a WRX because of the target market. I would definitely recommend folks cross shop it with other cars in the segment, it is just too bad the performance pack is not available until later this year or early next year. It seems like a must have IMHO if you buy the GTI...

My only problem with the GTI is personal. Twice I bought VW's (used GTI, brand new Jetta VR6) and both cars were extremely unreliable and VWoA and the dealerships were very difficult to work with (Jetta got Lemon Law'd)...

If the WRX was a Hatchback, that came standard with the LED headlights.

It would be an easy sell for Subaru vs. the GTI.

Currently from the pricing, I can get a GTI with Performance Pack, Lighting Package, 4 door, Manual, cloth seats, for less than the Base model price of the WRX.

Now...if the STI came with a new 2.0T engine....
That would be incredibly awesome!
