It's reasonably easy to trigger the coils, though a cheap multimeter won't catch the output spike. Load up the primary with 12v, give the secondary somewhere to ground, and pull power from the primary. As the primary magnetic field collapses, it should trigger the secondary.

You'll also want to measure the resistance across the primary and secondary coils.

Sent from my hand computer using radiation.

The Okada coils are sold as a complete set. I can't comment on their heat tolerance as I have yet to try/test these out on our car.

@MAPerformance, are the Okada coils priced individually or as a pack of four? Are they any more tolerant to heat than the OEM coils?

Cusco's are too expensive. Alternately, you could contact Accel, MSD, or similar companies about making some.

This may have been discussed earlier in the thread, but would an oil cooler help prevent coil/direct injector seal failures?

I'm actually going through the process of getting the P0351 code fixed (probably bad coil pack and I'm getting the popping noise under some conditions so the DI seals are probably having issues as well) and just started logging my oil temps when I track the car. This weekend they were consistently in the 270-280f range while on track, so I think an oil cooler is going to be my next upgrade.

Don't "think" it will be your next upgrade, do it ASAP.

The oil cooler will help prevent the CP failure. It will also help prevent DI failure too (if it has already failed, nothing left to do).

Also, are you tuned? If not, I recommend getting one to fix the DI failure issue. (You can also flash the newest calibration with fix with a tactrix cable for free).

By next upgrade, I mean it will be done before my next track event. Still on stock tune, I think it was flashed around May last year with whatever was the most recent flash, so I'm not sure it has the DI fix or not. I'll look into getting a tune in the near future, but wanted to hold off until I upgraded exhaust.

OFT stage 1! You can bump to stage 2 once you get your exhaust done, but stage 1 is still a decent improvement over stock and gets rid of the DI issue.

Well good. But also like I said, with a tactrix cable a friend can lend you for an hour or so, you can flash and fix the DI issue if indeed you need it and don't need to pay a dime for it.

I've already gone through coils A and C, and recently started to see a CEL for B. A and C were replaced under warranty at the same time, along with direct injectors, about 6 months ago. Car is currently at the dealer for Coil B, and I just got a call from them telling me they are replacing all 4 spark plugs and coils, because supposedly there are some updated parts. The service adviser could be feeding me BS, but when I pick the car up, I'll inquire about part numbers and possible TSB info and post an update here.

@ATL BRZ @gramicci101

Got the car back. No TSB, but they replaced 4 spark plugs and ignition coils. Hopefully the SEC makes oil coolers legal for STX for next year because I'd like to continue tracking and autocrossing with the same car.

I thought that was already legal? Or at least, being very actively discussed and favorably looked upon by the rules people?

It's under review with a positive outlook, but hasn't been fast tracked yet, to my knowledge.

Finally got the Toyota dealer convinced there might be a problem with the DI seals. After a ride along with me reproducing the popping noise and the mechanics call with Toyota headquarters with logs from the ride along, they are going to inspect the seals. Oil cooler is also on the way so hopefully I won't have to deal with this problem again after the cooler is installed and a tune.

Please stay on topic in this thread, which is for ignition coil failure and the subsequent CEL codes related to it.

We don't want people reading this and thinking that P0351 or similar codes mean their DI seals have failed. The two problems are NOT known to be directly related.
