Well, CRAP - mrs humfrz just announced that we do not have any hot water -

I told her - no problem, I already had my weekly shower. She didn't think that was funny -

OK, so, I was looking for something to do today, anyway -

There are two kinds of people in the world - those who have had a gas hot water heater blow up in their face - and those that haven't.

Let me set my bloody Mary down here, I'll go out to the garage and fix it - be right back.

I have one. I don't have one on my days off. At least I'm in a corner cube with a window.

I've replaced many a water heater in my days. Never had one blow up? I've had the bottoms fall out and flood the place. Not fun.

Yeah... I'll be in the first one, if I do replace it.

Since you have gas (apparently) I would highly recommending swapping to a tankless water heater. I've had one for 15 years and will never go back! We can do laundry, fill the garden tub and have two people taking showers at the same time and never run out of water.

They are more expensive up front but we did see a decrease in our gas bill during the summer (when our only gas usage is water) of about 10%. Slow ROI but continuous hot water is worth it!

I totally agree with this. Rinnai is a good brand. Even better is a hybrid of tankless and a small tank. Not as efficient but you get unlimited water and you get faster hot water.

OK, you just brought on a story.

Back in the late 60s, while working for an agricultural research company, I was appointed as director of an agricultural research station near Coyote, CA. You know about where that is. Actually, it was a 130 acres of prune orchard that I was to turn into a research station.

The property had a small stucco house that was going to be my office. It did have running water from a large gravity tank on the property. But, no hot water.

So, I looked under the dug out crawl space under the house and saw a gas hot water heater hooked to a propane tank.

Now, this was back in the days before they put all of the CAUTIONS and instructions on those damn things. So, I filled the tank, turned on the gas, lit a large wooden match and stuck it under the heater.....

The next thing I knew, I was sitting on the steps leading out of the semi-walk out basement, blinded and partially on fire. -

THE END

I haven't hooked it up, but have thought about it. The Rinnai I have has an option for circulating hot water using the cold water pipes as a return. You put a cross-over at the furthest faucet out and it slowly recirculates the water as it cools down in the pipes. Again you lose some efficiency but you have instant hot water. It also has the side effect of circulating the water in all your pipes which I suspect would help freezing.
