For some reason I get this feeling they were telling people about the awesome features like the current crop of electronics in cars, mainly Toyota's newer driver safety package, and improved Apple/Android connectivity, etc. Basically things enthusiasts put way down at the bottom of the "need" list.

See post #288!

When making those the focus of marketing it is the harbinger of doom. I have seen it time and time again over the decades.

Yeah, nothing else is really coming to mind though.

Yeah turn-around changes seem to happen in the 3rd/4th generations.... 4th gen Supra, 3rd gen RX-7, 3rd gen Camaro, 4th gen Miata, etc... but they never seem to get weight back to anywhere near 1st gen... save miata. 1st gen always seems to be as light as that name will ever be... and I'll never forgive Honda for what they did to the Honda Insight... LOL

I’ll be happy as long as it doesn’t resemble this “86” I saw this past weekend at Osaka Automesse:

Just reading the posts you’ve put on here. I really hope you’re wrong too. I’m working from home today as I had to take my wife to a medical appt. I thought why not take the BRZ, there’s not much traffic in the middle of a work day and it’s a nice day. I usually only drive it on weekends, so kind of a treat. Anyways, down shifted, took a corner quick onto the on-ramp, then onto the freeway. There were some twisty roads on the way, it made a rather mundane trip fun. The lightness, quick response of the steering, the shifter, revving out the engine etc. brought a smile to my face.

Come back from the trip and read this, I’m hoping for an enhancement of the above not the reverse. If it becomes bloated and diluted I won’t be buying a second gen.

I agree with the previous posts decrying a focus group/mass market driven redesign. You'll get a 'sport' SUV.

I think to get the kind of car enthusiasts want requires the strong willed, single focus leadership of somebody in senior management. Somebody who realizes that although they have to cater to the market with blimpmobiles, there must be a few cars - even if they just break even on them - ' for people who really, really love cars to drive right by people who don't really care about cars at all.' If you don't have real cars guys in senior management, you're dead.

Read the post, absolutely agree with you. It's nothing new to enthusiasts. We've all seen what companies can do to a car when they're desperate to increase sales. Mazda seems immune to this degradation, to a point, with the Miata. It's always been the car that is what it is, even if it did fatten up a bit in the previous generation.

Indeed. My point was more on the fact that the MK3 Supra, or essentially the first Toyota Supra, was a different car from the the first two generations, unbound by its ties to the Celica nameplate and platform. Because the Celica went to an all new FF platform, and changed to a "T" chassis designation over its former "A" (that the Supra retained), that you could make a small argument that the first "Toyota Supra" was really the 1st gen of the all new platform. Before then it was Celica Supra, or Celica XX in Japan, and the two cars were tied to the same platform.

When I worked at a Toyota dealership back in 2005 as the used sales lot attendant I actually had the opportunity to drive both a used MR-2 Spyder and a used Porsche Boxster within the same week. Both were on the lot. The MR-2 Spyder was, to me, the clear winner. Watched enough Best Motoring to know that a 2ZZ swapped MR-2 Spyder would be no joke. It was a blast with just the 1ZZ. Stock, it was far more fun than the Boxster.
