Disabling seat-belt chime - Do airbags still deploy?
I recently ordered a DOT approved street legal harness (Schroth Rallye 3) for both the passenger and driver side. I've heard you can disable the "Seat belt not connected" chime by clicking/unclicking the seatbelt 20 times in 30 seconds. My question is, will the airbags still deploy if I disable this? I searched the forums and Google for a solid hour and can't find out definitively.

I doubt you can turn off the airbags unless you physically disconnect the connectors. the passenger side will have the airbag light for sure so keep an eye on that.

There is a discussion on this and i think we concluded that the new system sense the passenger side as a fault in the circuit and cuts it.

Airbags dont deploy unless the seatbelt is plugged in whether the chime is dinging or not iirc. Hence why passenger side dash wont deploy without a passenger and the light flashes telling you airbag off if it triggers from something. Driver side might still deploy since it knows the driver is there but since it is part of a safety restraint system meant to work with seat belts I would venture it won't trigger any forward airbag.

It looks like you can disable the alarm without impacting the function but I will let somebody that is better at reading the diagrams confirm or deny that.

I think the best way to disable the chime while ensuring airbags deploy would be to just connect the OEM seat belt with a buckle so the circuit completes. Has anyone removed this function of the circuit before and just shorted the pins so the SRS thinks someone has the seat buckled?
Edit: This would be completing the connection H19 - Front Seat Inner Belt Assembly LH on page 248 that Tcoat linked. |

No. The best way to turn off the chime is to use carista or techstream to disable it programmatically; the way the feature was designed.

Carista, I understand, is inexpensive. I can't see why a dealer wouldn't be willing to do it. They'll shut off your DRL for you. They won't throw you in the hoosegow for asking.

Does that make any sense at all? Am I way off base in what I read into it?

Also, I am assuming that, both for safety and to save cost, that the system operates under the assumption that the driver's seat is occupied whenever the car is operated. It makes no sense otherwise.

$33 from Japanparts + shipping I think they might be the solution you're looking for... Maybe. I wonder if there is any redundancy that lets the car know you've got the seatbelt on other than the belt clip, such as sensing if the seatbelt has been tugged suddenly, or at least if it has been been pulled from resting position.
