Also for you AT guys looking for a way to lock the flex-plate. Not recommending it, but there should be an "inspection cover" on the bell housing (where the front of the trans and the rear of the engine meet, manuals will have them too). If you remove the cover you should see the teeth on the flex-plate (flywheel for manuals) that the starter uses to start the car. You'll need two people, but often times you can finagle a flathead screwdriver or pry bar in between the teeth and hold the flex-plate by prying against the bell housing. Only reason I don't really recommend it is because if you slip and damage a tooth it can damage your starter and replacing both is $$$. Best bet is to use an impact or buy the proper tool to hold the flexplate tho.

Do you have to use a breaker bar?

Can I just use a wrench pictured below?

you are going to need a breaker bar or something you can extended the wrench with.
I used the pole on my jack to get more leverage

Definitely need something to give you more leverage. I have a 1/2" drive torque wrench that is a good 2' long and it worked without problem. I was more worried it would break loose and I would dent my fender or something than anything else, which it didn't so I don't think you'll have to worry about it. As for how "hard" it is to break loose... it takes a little effort, its on pretty good but I didn't find it to be hard. Did it without swearing or thinking it was impossible lol. I've loosened much tighter bolts in my day.

Used the DIY for the pulley. IDK what you guys are talking about with that bolt not being tight. I weight 150 lbs, and it took me putting all of my body weight on the breaker bar to crack that sucker. Other than that, easy install.

Does installing this pulley void the warranty?

If they, the dealership/scion/Subaru can prove that the engine failed because you put a lite weight pulley on..

I had mine installed, TSI did it while I was away for work. They made a tool right there.. I don't know if I noticed a thing.. Most likely the heavy ass torque converter the engine has to spin.. But I'm not disapointed with my purchase at all

Is this before or after you replaced the frayed belt?

I installed a pulley this past week and notice what sounds like gear whine. Searching hasn't yielded much result, but my best guess is that the lighter pulley transmits more NVH. This sound is directly related to engine speed and not the car speed. In or out of gear, it is noticeable at around 2500 RPM and higher. Seriously sounds almost like a supercharger, but once the revs get high enough, the exhaust (Nameless axleback) drowns it out.

Nothing else seems to be affected, the pulley doesn't wobble and I've seen no leaks. All Subarus make funny noises anyway, so I'm not freaking out. Just looking for a little validation in my life.

Aside from all that, I really like the more natural feel of rev matching. I no longer have to double-blip!
