I kinda figured they did, i just didn't want to put in the effort of trying to make them play nice with the factory setup on a car i'll be getting rid of very shortly. I figured i'd just wait to get my FRS, that way i don't have to mess with the wheel control at all and just routing the ipod cable into the glove box.... easy peasy.

nononononononono of course not, lol. All I'm saying is that my BRZ already has a touchscreen /w navi and I dont feel the need to change it yet since the only thing I find useful is the Torque app which I already have on my Android phone.

This mod however, would be great for those guys with an FRS since that car is $1,000 less than the BRZ and doesnt have a cool touchscreen like ours yet.

any word on a headunit that might run something more like android 4.0 i know 2.3 is pretty damn good but i know a lot of advancements have been made especially with the touch screen's response since then...especially if it could run 4.1 jelly bean since it has project butter

You'll have to post a video of it in action.
Yup, I got the ca-fi knockoff version and haven't had a problem with it yet. Been tethering it to my phone for net connection. I think I've figured out the steering wheel control problem, but I have to buy a $60 unit to make it work which I haven't done yet.

Still haven't figured out how to use the stock iPod and Aux inputs, though. I think it'd be easy if I could find diagrams for the stock aux harness, but no luck yet. What I may end up doing is just tearing out that entire cable since I think it just leads to the aux stuff in the center armrest, and figuring out how to manually switch it out for the new stuff.

I have no doubt that in a couple of years we'll see these head units come with better processors, capacative screens, and Jelly Bean standard. This is the first foray into Android-based head units (though I don't know why it's taken someone this long to do it), and as they get more and more popular they'll get more and more powerful, and cheaper hopefully.

To me, this is the only way to go if you want a touchscreen head unit in your car.

Exactly. It's not a powerhouse, but it's still worlds better than what Kenwood and Pioneer offer.... all while being competitive price-wise, in the head unit sector.

I haven't had any issues with my knock off one either....

forgive me, subie owners, for imposing on your forum, but this is the most comprehensive conversation about the Android HUs I've found so far.

Using android as the brains of the car interface has been a dream of mine for some time, but the process of setting up a custom, one-off, tablet-driven system seems quite cludgy, especially since we are still waiting for good USB DAC support (all of the android 3.5mm audio outs i've encountered are terrible, so the clean audio of an external, usb driven DAC is definitely optimal).

Enter the android HU. arguments aside (i trudged through that flame war), I think the android HU has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, i also see the downside of using outdated hardware (resistance screens, single-core processors) and software (froyo) simply because there are apps and interfaces out there that would benefit from the latest and greatest. or at least the slightly-more-recent-and-decent.

that being said, here [clicky clicky] is a reason to want 2.3! I about crapped myself when i saw this, simply because I was worried that Valentine would ignore Escort/bell's integration with mobile devices. This is obviously Valentine's first attempt at an app, and from what i've read over at radardetectors.net, the app could definitely use some work (landscape mode). BUT it is a step in the right direction, and maybe some of the talented software developers floating around the forums could have some fun rehashing the UI.

Both the CA-FI and the Adayo units seem like they are well put together, but obviously the Adayo is slightly behind the newest CA-FI in terms of hardware and software. Also, the new Parrot Asteroid Smart HU might bring some more competition to the market, but it isn't out yet and they don't specify their hardware and software, so it might be a crapshoot.

Anyway, with people like protekk (and other developers) around, these HUs could reach their full potential of providing a unique and customized turn-key approach for integrating our mobile world with our vehicles.

i'm excited to follow this thread and others to see where they end up, and hopefully i can have an Android HU within a year!

sorry for the dissertation, and here's to hoping...
