Android head unit
Hi all,
I'm planning on replacing the base scion head unit with an android 2din one. Anyone have any suggestions on a good one for a fair price? |

Android users don't have a lot of options. The best choice right now is probably the appradio2. There are lots lots of mixed reviews, and but if your phone in compatible with it, but it a a good choice when it's synced and working properly. Look to spend about 500 for for the HU plus cables

Kenwood's Excelon series head units offer a downloadable app for Android that allows you to connect your phone via usb and you get access to all your music (and possibly video - have to double check).

I don't have faith that, even if the android HUs come out, the HU won't be a PITA to use like every other one on the market.
As a project just for fun, I'm thinking of turning a 7" android tablet into a HU.

My concern is with the sound quality of anything sent through the HU. I think I'd rather use the tablet as a second screen for GPS/Apps, and then try to route as much audio as possible through the head unit. I picked up one of those famous HP Touchpads for $150 when they went clearance. I'm going to install Android on it one of these days. If google maps runs as well on that as it does on my EVO cell phone.. that would be phenominal!!! Last edited by eikond; 06-08-2012 at 01:16 PM. |

I'm thinking of doing the same thing! I already bought a 7" galaxy tab (1st gen) and put ICS on it and installed tasker on it so it powers the screen when the car is turned on and the screen shuts off when the car is turned off...pretty cool app. Once I get my BRZ and end up not liking the OEM HU (I hear its GUI is pretty ugly...) I'm going to put up a nice writeup tutorial here for anyone else who wants to do the same thing.
Here is a good write up someone did with his VW golf. Good info if you are serious about doing this stuff. http://www.mp3car.com/android-tablet...-pictures.html |

Not sure, but I know there are some droid apps for EQ. I would assume (because I haven't done it...yet!) that it would be the same as plugging your ipod into a Kenwood HU.

I thought about an Android HU the 1st time I saw the 2DIN space.
My idea is to get: Chinese $ 300 HU or a tablet with at least froyo and 1 ghz processor Sygic navigator Bluetooth high frequency GPS receiver OBD2-Bluetooth interface Datalog / error ECU app Track datalog app (for trackdays) 16+ GB Sd Card SIM with data connection If possibile a rear view camera Voice activated navigation, Google search wherever you want, movies, mp3 etc... |

Is WebOS really that bad that you have to install Android on it? Or is it because WebOS is dead? Cuz I can pick one up for like 100 bucks

I actually like the Samsung Tab. I got 9 days of battery life on that thing with browsing and email checking with some Battleheart and PvZ.
