Ok, I gotta ask, what makes a decent one vs a bad one? Isn't it spam, rice and seaweed?

Let's just say my screen name is pretty self explanatory...

The "spam misubi" that you would typically get from a Hawaiian bbq chain is a joke.* First, most of them don't even use real spam to begin with, just some random spam-like canned meat (yes, discerning palates can tell).* Hangten gives you a generous slice and then deep fries the spam, making a crisp surface all around (vs gingerly flipped around on a flat grill to a slight warm).* The rice is a generous packed block and actual sticky sushi rice is used (not just regular rice they happen to serve with the rice plates) so the thing doesn't fall apart the moment you bite into it.* They put a nice savory sweet Hawaiian teriyaki sauce between the spam and the rice and wrapped with dry sea weed that gives a fresh crispy texture you can bite through (vs soft and soggy seaweed that rips and pulls the whole thing apart when you bite in).*

Let's just say I was a regular and the folks knew what I was there for the moment they see me walk in lol. Also helps that I knew the cook @Kamakanani0

Now that we've done a deep dive into spam misubis, don't get me started on chicharones from Taqueria Ramiro & sons...

That taqueria is fucking lame. Cash only and they use square slices of bullshit cheese in their burritos and quesadillas. Also all their meats are watery as fuck and bland and they give you the stink eye as they don't drain the beans before slopping them into the tortilla.

Fuck that place.

Lol, actually most of that is pretty accurate. I don't really like anything else they have there but the chicharones plate is the exception. Fatty chunks of stewed pork, deep friend to crunchy bits topped with that bomb hot sauce and some pico with a side of rice (ya, I skip the super wet beans too). Who wouldn't want a plate of that?!

I do like how they call you "hermano" and insists on speaking to everybody in Spanish (it's hilarious watching new people try to order). Never got the stink eye tho... Maybe it's your hipster beard? 😉

Monday lunch near Fisherman's Wharf? Waterbar is delicious and expensive, good if not many people are coming. Then there's just getting clam chowder in a sourdough bowl from a stand. That's as SF tourist as you get.

Tuesday lunch in Alameda? Ole's in Alameda has awesome chicken and waffles. I wouldn't eat anything else there, not that it's bad. Just that it's not as good as the chicken and waffles.

If you leave Alameda, towards Oakland and Berkeley, there's Zachary's Pizza; Chicago-ish style. Knife and fork only, and you can take a pie up to the brother. It's just as good cold the next day.

I can go to either day. Maybe both. Can't make the boat tours, though.
