Have been driving my car (1/13 production) a fair bit lately, can't say I have ever heard it ping @ any speed or revs, sudden or loading. I would most certainly pick it, my old st204R celica was notorious for it, so much so I installed a water injection system to help kill it. This 86 appears to be working well except for the HPFP which gets a little noisy at times when idling.

Will keep you guys posted if anything changes.

Spoke to the dealer yesterday, and apparently there's no updated tune that they can flash into the car.
So they want to keep the car for a few hours next week and data log the pinging, and send the info to subaru oz.
Fingers crossed they fix it, as I don't really want to do any exhaust mods or anything until it's sorted!

Hey mate, just wondering if this went any further? I thought I heard a ping in mine last night but it was just the once. Now I'm paranoid and wondering if there's any further info...

Unfortunately mate, I haven't had much luck.
I've had the car in 3 times already and all they have found is an exhaust leak where the header joins the overpipe. I'll have to ask next week what the data logging results picked up.

Picked mine up last week, had it happen a few times while going up hill in 2nd/3rd.

Only up to 250kms atm. Drove all of today though, could not replicate.

hey guys, I've previously posted in this thread before regarding my concerns.
in short, I got my car in august 2012 and at that point in time i thought this was a serious concern.

However, 3 weeks ago, i went in for the 9month service and surprisingly, after the change in liquids, this rattling sound is gone. To be more precise, even the mechanical whine is gone during acceleration. However, whenever the car is still cold, there is a little mechanical whining and pinging, but this happens only like 5% of the time =/..i only recall hearing it once after the 3 weeks and it was very very subtle..

perhaps everyone should take it easy lol and enjoy your cars

My car has the pinging noise to quite a severe extent.

After about 3000k's travelled in the car the pinging occure a couple of times and only very feintly.
After installation of a header-back exhaust system, perrin CAI and an ecutek tune the pinging became a hell of a lot worse. Very noticeable inside and outside of the car in nearly every gear under load from 3k-5k rpm. Particularly noticeable under WOT and through 2nd to 4th gears.

I have spoken to my workshop foreman, the exhaust shop and the ecutek tuners that wrote my tune.

Suspicions are it is something related to mechanical switching between the 2 injection modes.

I have flashed the factory ECU tune back to the car and the pinging whilst still present is now less noticable and only happens for a second around 4K rpm in most gears under the same load conditions.

I have sent log files and video clips to the tuners to investigate further and see if it something that can be tuned out.

Will follow up with updates as i get them.

That's the problem with mine, It happened only once before but today, as I was sitting in traffic and short shifting "aggressively" around 3500-4000 from 2-3 then 3-4. I could make it happen 90% of the time.

Filling a complaint to the dealer next week, in the mean time i'm taking it easier.
