Hey Myles, is this the link that I order the 4.55 gears from? http://www.lexuspartsnow.com/parts/l...201-80050.html

Also, where do I get the install pipe and 22 shims? Anything else needed? Oh and thanks for the write up!

3450 rpm @ 6th gear? Sounds like exactly what I want! I thought it'd be worse than that, I think I'll definitely go for the 4.55 final drive based on that information

I know this car needs some better gearing. It would fit the car perfectly.

I'm also surprised - you said 6th feels like the old 5th. I'm sure it pulls a little less (based off the 3450rpm statement at least.. I know my current 5th at 70 is like around 4000rpm), but I'm ok with that for a little bit more highway drivability. Glad to hear it feels good though! Stock 6th is pretty much unusable IMO (past some minor passes on highway).

I think this car with the 4.55 FD, headers/tune, yellows/sways, new brake pads would be the perfect fun daily driver and weekend warrior on the track.

Haven't heard of anybody doing this on AT yet. I would think this summer or relatively soon there is a very good chance at least one shop with AT car (FA20club, P&L, etc...) will go this route. Not saying that because they told me, just speculating.

Just wanted say thank you for this discussion and for the original post. I've been lurking for quite a long time and in reading up on it (almost daily) I’ve been finding this forum a great wealth of information.

This is the same direction I took on my AT Monaro (GTO in the states) a few years back to give her a little more low down power. She had the LS1, which was a rather high revving engine and I wanted to enhance the bottom end without expensive mods.

I am committed to getting into an 86 in the not too distant future and am intending to stay NA with regards to my mods. As I will be getting an AT I’m reading on with great interest and hoping to see how this transforms the AT equipped cars of our readers.

I definitely think the AT can benefit greatly from a higher final drive ratio. I'd think its doable, I know its a similar tranny to the lexus. Wonder if its even a direct swap, like the manual?

[QUOTE=Racecomp Engineering;707576
Hell the HOT ROD domestic guys have been doing this for 40+ years !
Myles[/QUOTE]

I am surprised that so many people do not know about the performance benefits of running a lower FD. Not only the Hot Rodders and drag racers have been doing it for years. It is also common practice to adjust the FD on all kinds of track cars and performance street cars. This was especially the case in the 70s and 80s when cars were choked by emission and fuel mileage requirements but the fancy computer controlled ignition systems were not common yet.

@ RCE I really admire your approach to increasing the performance of the BRZ/FR-S. NA performance may not be the easy way to go but it is usually simpler and more reliable than aftermarket FI. You seem to be thinking your way through the performance increases as opposed to just bolting on a blower and cranking up the boost then dealing with all the potential bad things that can and usually will happen.

Keep up the great work!

Edit:Thought about it more and maybe I do understand why the FD has become a lost science to those seeking street and weekend track performance. Front drivers have dominated the import performance scene for the last 20 years. It is a lot tougher to change the final drive in a transaxle than it is in a differential on a RWD car.

I'm willing to try it, but I need to know everything I need and where to get the parts before I jump in. I'm thinking on the MFactory 4.67 gear set. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you mean the MFactory parts or the installation parts? I have a Cusco PDF that gives OEM Nissan Part #'s for various shims. I dont know how to link to the pdf.

I have a Cusco 4.55 set to arrive on friday, waiting on fluids and then will install.
