I'm guessing glossing up the diffuser beneath would brighten up the black to where it draws more attention. It probably would look sharp, but glossy finishes like to be smooth while textured finishes like to be matte.

I was looking at the trunk just yesterday thinking "that piece would look good in black". You just verified that for me! I'd want a flat black that matches the other trim though, but I like the gloss black on yours.

Also, great work on the skull! Man, I've got to get my father-in-law to step it up! All I ever get from him on my birthday is a homemade chocolate cheesecake (not that I'm complaining mind you).

IIRC, There's 4x 8mm nuts that need to be unscrewed on the backside of the trunk lid, and a plastic push-clip that just needs to pop out. From there, everything else should be pretty self-explanatory.

When you start doing paint prep, there's 4 small rubber pieces on the bottom and a long rubber piece on the top that is stuck on with a sticker. They come off easily, and some 3m adhesive spray worked to put them back together.

I think it definitely is possible to have gotten away with not taking the rubber pieces off and carefully taping over them, but definitely taking them off makes for a very professional finish.

Hehe.. Everyone's wondered if I did wire them up to red LEDs. Good idea, but probably something I'd pass on. I'm sure someone else will do it soon enough =)

I was looking for a part to paint and after a bit of studying, it looked like going black on that piece would have a nice accent. I had the same thought on a matte black. I'd be curious to see how it does with a matte black paint job. There would definitely be a contrast between the regular glossy paint against the matte black paint. Just not sure if matte would look good or not.

Imagine the piece having a finish like:
