Dealer contacted me today to install the fix in my car.
I'll try to remember to follow up here (I don't hit this forum often.)

Could someone post if any SoCal dealers have a fix for this yet? Since I bought my car out of state, I don't have a go-to dealer yet and would like to find one that has good reviews from people in this forum. (their service dept)

This fix consisted of a new antenna and a bracket to mount it further from the head unit, plus an SD card with new firmware. I went into the service menu to check the firmware version before and after the fix. Before the fix it was:
44.1003 12/4/1
(That second number looks like a Japanese style date for April 1st.)

after the fix it was:
44.1004 12/08/0

The CD version stayed the same at 1.04.

In the service menu I also checked the vehicle speed sensor reading. Instead of the crazy reading more than 50% too high, it now reads correctly with a value of 59 MPH when the dash readout reads 60 MPH.

So... did this fix the problem of the GPS not knowing where the car is? Since it sometimes worked before, I won't be sure until I have driven it for a week or so. But, so far so good. I have driven it a few times, and each time it immediately locked on my position.
Are you able to pick up any more satellites? I tend to get 3.

So far, yes. I am now typically getting 7 satellites. I don't know yet how consistant this will be, but it seems more than I got before the fix.

My Navi looses signal regularly in the exact same areas of my route. Also, I still don't get traffic on my Navi even though I'm getting XM/Sirius radio (free for 3 months IIRC).

My nav unit often doesn't work if the car's been parked underground when it's started. I find that pulling over, turning off the engine, waiting a minute and turning it back on fixes it.

Makes me feel like an idiot, though.

I had this problem last night, I was so far away from home too.

I tried to use my phone as an alternative and that was receiving a signal. But then my battery was dying. So I pulled over and restarted the car and it took a while to get a signal but it did.

GG. I would have been lost in the middle of nowhere at 2 AM.

I suggest that you schedule an appointment to have the fix installed. So far it has made a big difference: now the unit is just always locked on position. I was able to schedule the install along with my 3000 mile oil change. My dealer did them both in one day and gave me a loaner car while they did the work.

I swapped my car for the loaner the evening before. They called me in the early afternoon the next day to tell me it was all set and that I could pick it up. They had a Subaru rep come down and install the fix, so I needed to make the appointment about a week ahead according to his schedule. It was just fortunate that I happened to be at 3000 miles then, because my dealer gives me free oil changes with the first one at that mileage.

The dealership forgot to activate it for you. Call them. This has probably happened to most of us BRZ owners.

Thanks! My nav rarely worked well in the wooded areas of NH, even though my old TomTom worked great. Next time I go to the dealer hopefully they can do this for me too.

Me too! I just filled it out. I told them that the nav system sucks for two reasons.. #1 it hardly ever locks on to a GPS signal. #2 it has a terribly slow interface and you have to stop the car to enter in an address.
