I had a similar concern as you and would give the opposite advice of what everyone else is saying. Maybe double clutching would work, but I actually started shifting *faster* rather than slower into 2nd (not slamming it in or anything, but one swift motion almost as soon as I fully clutch in) and the clunking noise that I was previously hearing stopped happening. I'm definitely shifting before the revs are lined up with 2nd gear, so it doesn't really make sense to me re: synchros, but maybe you should give it a try.

Finally we have some folks who get it. Just don't pause in neutral. If you miss the opportunity. double-clutch to spin up the gears and let it settle in.

On the days I am a bit lazy and slower in the shift I may get a light "clunk". When I shift in my "normal" manner it is always smooth and easy no matter what temperature it is.

[QUOTE=Decep;3550416]Usually helps if before you take off, work the stick (pause) through all the gears a few times at a standstill. Also it sounds counter intuitive but when it's cold its better to make the shift with all one motion, try not to pause too long in between 1st and 2nd.
I disagree. I find that when cold, it's better to apply light finger pressure on the shifter to move it to neutral then while continuing light pressure it drops into second. Attempting to get the shift done in one motion with a heavier effort almost always results in a crunch engagement. Shifting at normal operating temp is fine for me. |

In my case, in the cold, trying to apply finger pressure and then pausing and the shifter wouldn't move an inch. It just had to be done in one motion.
