I’ve seen a few Rivians. I haven’t seen the SUV. Same thing really, right?

Just drove by one of these on the road. Was tempted to take a quick driving snapshot, but there was a lot of traffic so I erred toward more safety.

Honestly I think it looks better than the flatbed version. I thought from pictures it'd look bulkier, but it wasn't too bad IRL. I've seen a bunch of the flatbed version around here as well.

Love the motors at the wheels, and views from 3 of the 4 sides, and the height adjustments.

Hate the cockpit, hate the front end. The energy utilization seems poor, but it is a quad motor vehicle.

Also, would be concerned about longevity of the company given some of the recent press it's getting.

Ultimately, I'm passing.

I'm in the same boat. I really liked a lot of things about the Rivian but I can't get over the startup issues. My next rig will probably be an EV truck.

It's just too high priced. I know it's more of a niche with it being geared more towards lifestyle, but dang...Too much for an SUV or pickup, even in today's market.

Is it?

R1S - 73K (Base - dual motor), Quad Motor Adventure 91K

Tesla Model X - 113K - 130K
F150 lighting - 94K

Cadillac Escalate - 79-103K
BMW X7 60i - 103K (Base)
Merc G- Glass - 131K (Base)
Range Rover 104K (Base)
Defender 110 X - 91K
Defender 110 V8 - 118K
Lexus LX - 90 - 110K
Jeep Grand Wagoneer - 88-108K

Luxury Pick-ups pretty much the same costs..

I agree the price is ridiculous as well, but unfortunately not out of line with its competition at all. All vehicle prices are insane these days..

I think the issue is they haven't yet gotten to a point where Rivian can produce a lower end trim truck/SUV. You can buy plenty of similar size trucks/SUVs for under the prices you quote.

For example you can get a new 4WD Tahoe for as little as $57K MSRP.

You can get models of Lightnings for way under 94K though. The base MSRP is 40K. If you could get one at MSRP Spec'd the way I want, it would be around 60K MSRP.

Keep in mind the Rivian is a luxury SUV, and to compare it to the like..

Yukon Denali starts at $77K for example..
Option it up and you are pushing $90K
The Hummer EV and EV SUV - Seen prices quoted at $80 - 130K

$94K figure just came from a C&D test article for a Platinum model, which is likely equivalent to the trim level of the Rivian..

The Article quotes the base price as $92,669 and the as tested price as $93,609..

Keep in mind that it still costs orders of magnitude more to build EV's than ICE vehicles at this time. Big companies like Ford and GM use their ICE vehicle sales to help subsidize this to a degree as well, something upstarts like Rivian don't have the luxury of doing.

But even so, again, Rivian's only come as pretty loaded luxury level vehicles, so you need to compare that price to an equally optioned vehicle, not whatever the entry level price is..

Ahh, gotcha. Through me off a bit when you listed base prices of some other vehicles but I see now you are comparing apples to apples. The Lightning is pretty high on my list right now. There are enough charging stations to tow the car to my local tracks without having to worry about range anxiety and DD'ing it every day would cost about 100/month according to my local utility company. I am another year from really making a decision and want to see what other offerings come up before buying.

I was essentially agreeing you, but saying you can get a similar size SUV for less, but Rivian isn't offering a lesser trim version at this time but the probably could reduce the price if they chose to do so.

We should all aspire to own $200K electric SUVs because they do something regular SUVs don't do, 0-60 in <3 s. That's groundbreaking, something we all need to pay for.

Let's see where electrification cost goes for a premium quality ride moving forward.
