Perfectly normal and not what people are complaining about here. This sound is distinctly like crickets, videos have been posted of it. I think one is in the first couple pages.

Have ~1400 miles on it now. On cold start up, no chirping. After warming up and driving a bit, sounds like a herd of crickets. I only notice it at idle, though. When the engine is under even the mildest load (i.e. slowly pulling away from a stop light in 1st) there's no chirping, just like the OP. It's interesting that it's only under idle when it happens...hopefully Toyota and Subaru will address the issue promptly. As long as it's not affecting the driveability, I'm ok with it for now, having faith it will be addressed.

I have 1300 miles on my Ultramarine. My car does it during idle and at low speeds. Its really noticeable in my car and I'm pretty embarrassed at stop lights and when carrying passengers.

Here is a video I shot of my chirping noise. Notice at the 57 second mark there is a new strange noise from the HPFP:
Don't know how to embed video. |

I have 1262 miles on my scion fr-s and I was running 91 with 10% ethanol, and it was starting to chirp hard. So, I needed to fill up, and I decided to try one more time the Lucas oil since it did quiet it down a bit. I just got back today from school and had to fill up. After the fill up I drove for about 20 miles half in the city and half on the highway with the A/C full blast. I filled up at a Shell station with VPower 91 that had 10% ethanol and added the Lucas Oil first to get the mix going when I filled up. I did not have the chirp anymore and it was gone completely, but I will watch this tank and see if it will happen again. After this tank if it does stay quiet the whole time I will try to fill up with 91 again without the Lucas oil to see if anything happens again. I hope this helps.

I am at 2000 miles now and the chirping has appeared to stop. I haven't heard since i did an oil change around 1200 miles, the chirping started around 400 miles for me. I used Penzoil and a K&N filter.
My driving habits have also changed a little bit. I've been driving much more spirited. I've also been using my AC less, weather has been cooler lately. I wonder if any of these may factor into the chirping. I'll let you know if it returns. |
