If they do go ahead with it, it perhaps helps manual gearboxes remain relevant to new generations, which will make _real_ manuals more desirable at the end of the day.
I would be interesting to see the response to it, if they do indeed make it happen, which is a considerable if. |

Toyota EV. The savior of stick shift and rear wheel drive?
I’m here for it.
Edit: oh no it’s emulated. Damn. I was hoping it was an outrunner style motor (more TQ, less RPM), with an actual gearbox. |

patents mean nothing. it's just toyota protecting/pay-walling an idea from everyone else.

As for the idea, simulated defeats the point we were talking about in the other thread. It’s the PHYSICAL connection to the drivetrain/transmission that matter. Not to mention other things like feathering the throttle, slipping 1st just before hitting the throttle, etc. In other words, I think I will be ready to call it quits on a manual at the same time they make me call it quits on ICE. For the record, don’t hate electric and look forward to the acceleration when I eventually, I am sure, will own one. But I will hang onto ICE as long as I can and as long as I do, it will be a manual. |

When ICE cars came out, they made a button that dropped horse shit on the road behind the car.
Oh, no they didn't. People back then were less stupid.

who's apple?
this is just ford, and just the first 10 links that a search popped up with. could do this with any big company, especially auto makers. now name how many current production vehicles any of these systems currently exist as an option in any way/shape/form. https://www.motor1.com/news/562430/f...-steps-patent/ https://futurism.com/ford-files-pate...verts-unicycle https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/26/fo...us-police-car/ https://www.hotcars.com/ford-files-p...into-your-car/ https://electrek.co/2020/05/15/ford-...ng-car-shield/ https://www.maverickchat.com/threads...ruck-bed.1890/

The cool thing about a M/T EV is that you would be rewarded with better regen efficiency if you downshift while braking |

is there a point though since electric motors don't use gears?

As for regen, the normal limits are the energy the batteries can take in and the comfort of the occupants. With my Model Y and I-Pace, we barely use the actual brakes. On the I-Pace, we rarely max out the available regen that the brake pedal controls. So, basically, not really. I am looking forward to the i4 M50. It does regen almost as hard as it accelerates, and it hits 60 in <3.9 seconds. But again, one speed.

Adding moving parts for the sake of adding moving parts when there is no huge benefit is just reducing reliability by introduce just another wear item to eventually break. As much as I enjoy traditional manual transmissions, if it's something redundant for electric motors. I'd rather them keep things simple.
