Confirmed the connectors are the same. I am likely going to be ordering a new unit from the dealer soon as the used market does not seem to be nearly as prevelant as previous years.

Did you see the price for the last model HU?

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=24

You are saying you guys can't find something better for that price?

Most of the cost is probably in the navigation system, which, if you us AA or ACP, then is really not necessary.

The Kenwood unit I have is 200mm, is capacitive touch, has an HD screen, has bluetooth ACP/AA and/or wired, is plug and play, has a CD/DVD player (DVD doesn't work unless you are from the right time zone), has the ability to integrate the Kenwood dash cams to the HU interface, can run multiple other sensors and back up cameras, is custimizable for sound and appearance, can integrated OEM steering wheel controls and antenna and USBs, etc, etc.

I mean, if you want to spend three times the price then it is your prerogative.

Yeah I’m willing to pay so that the main focal point inside the car looks solid. Just an aesthetic preference thing, not a performance for the money thing.

Keep us posted. I’d definitely do the same. How did you confirm the connectors?

Most reviews I have read say the different headunits looks like aftermarket units.

My Kenwood unit:

The 86's headunit looks a lot like the Pioneer unit, just in case you change your mind, but want something similar:

While I appreciate your concern for my wallet the new radio can be purchased for $724 which last I checked is about the same as the Kenwood radio you have mentioned. The Pioneer you showed can be had for less but ultimately both of those radios have to be ordered from outside the US through what I would consider non-standard sources. There are tons of people with great success stories using the Kenwood and the Pioneer you have shown both on this forum and the FJ Cruiser forum (same silly 200mm opening) but I prefer to go with an OEM solution that has been through Toyota's testing standards.

$724??? That is much better than the $2200, which is what I saw online for the old models. Care to share the link for everyone?

A google search for the part number PT2961819020 will get you several options to choose from. McGeorge Toyota is my normal go to and is $724 but I see one site is $711. McGeorge and a few others do not have the correct image however the other thread I linked previously confirms it is the right part number though including FCC documents and a Toyota installation manual.

Oh never mind, I didn't realize it doesn't come with navigation (only AA and ACP). That is why it is much cheaper. It looks like it might be capacitive touch versus resistive touch, but I couldn't tell for sure. I also couldn't find out if ACP and AA work off bluetooth. Maybe you can post up that info once you install the headunit.

Just wait. A used one will pop up for cheap soon enough.

I will probably give the damned thing away if I can't find a way to use the amp. They bypass the whole woofer amp system and just run the door speakers through the same feed as the dash ones. This results in a nice underpowered tinny sound from what are supposed to be amped woofers. Since the phone works through the door speakers the best you can get is a whisper volume even cranked u to 30. All in all this system was never meant for these cars and their work around totally sucks. If anybody can find a way to make them actually work I would love to hear it. Until then stay away. Stay far, far away.

I'm very confused on what 'non-standard sources' has to do at all with fitment and build quality of a unit. Higher quality, more control, and lower price tag are all reasons most people go towards aftermarket units. Just because your local Best Buy doesn't stock it doesn't mean there's a problem with it.

Also, these 'Toyota testing standards' (if they even exist for the audio system) have produced some notoriously crappy systems, over and over. I would actually use that as a reason not to use their stock components.

I feel like you're stuck in the jargon matrix. The words sound good coming out, but really in the end, you aren't saying anything of substance.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned that is worth pointing out is the 2020 BRZ stock unit is only WiFi/BT. There is no CD/DVD/SD card input. You can only select up to 8 maps to keep current, so if you live in a region like the Northeast US and frequently cross borders you may have to be selective.

The map updates are very slow and pre-downloading them to your phone is not much better.

My biggest complaint about the unit is the safety controls while driving that require you to use voice commands even if you are stopped at a light.

I don't seem to have the reverse volume control lockout that I have read about earlier models.

I really like the look and fitment of the 86 unit over the BRZ unit.
