I never get errors with my desktops, maybe because I build them myself?

But I have always had random shut downs and various problems with my portable devices.

I'd prefer to not have it if possible.

Well my point was that you make it seem like computers break easily.. which obviously isnt true. Also, less moving parts the better right?

Moving parts typically fail on a somewhat predictable manner. Electronics do not.

They are also usually unshielded and susceptible to cosmic rays. Yes, it sounds silly, which is why I love bringing it up.

Hehe...

Home electronics do not have the same temperature [-40 to +125°C] and humidity [0-100%] demands as automotive systems. There are many automotive qualification standards are much more stringent than many military specifications. As such, putting LCD's in cars is much more expensive simply from a parts procurement perspective.

I concur, though I am a huge fan of electronics. If I were forced to get a "computer" with as OS in my car, I'd get a Solid State Drive so those nasty pot holes and harsh movements won't affect it at all. I'm sure a regular hard drive won't last long in a car without problems.

FWIW, most current and future automotive "OS's" in the ECU and BCM are very tiny [less than 2MB] and are stored in error corrected flash memory. At this time only infotainment [NAV, music storage] use highly suspended and damped platter drives that are qualified over temp and humidity.

Lexus LS HDD nav/audio is not solid state.

Yeah, and some Cadillacs and American cars have them too but SSDs are the way to go IMO when it comes to mobility. SSDs have no moving parts, thus less likely to fail.

I prefer analog guages also, but with an lcd somewhere in the middle how many cars have them now. to tell MPG, temp, time, etc.

I honestly would prefer something like this. This happens to be out of a new Ford Hybrid, but I could imagine an analog Speedo and Tach surrounded by digital fuel, volt, oil pressure, ...

^^I love the Fusion Hybrid guage cluster! I think it would look awesome if the one analog ring in the middle was your tach, and then it had a small digital speedo readout above - really I care to look at my tach more than my speed (add in the same type LCD's to the left and right and it would be the perfect guage). I think that would look so good on a sporty car.

I actually work for the company that makes that for the fusion.

Not that is doesnt look nice, it doesnt belong in a sporty car. Know what i mean? Too many colors, bubbly-ish, etc. The LFA is awesome because while having vibrant colors it is also simplistic in appearance and showing info.

Not that I particularly think the above would look great in an FT but I agree a mix of analog and digital could be nice. Have analog tach right in the middle with speed in a digital screen somewhere inside or next to tach. Then have analog gas tank and engine temp and maybe another digital layout for your trip computer, mpg, outside temp....etc. Could be done to look well. I just don't want one big LCD screen.
