I've only seen inline/v engines put further back. Most subarus have the steering rack in front of the front axle, but under the engine.





The cylinder heads and steering column would occupy the same space in these cars if you moved the engine any further back since you'd have to put the steering rack in front of the engine.


They could possibly do something with a ton of extra u joints in the linkage, but I'm sure it would make something else WAY worse than the benefits of moving the engine back a couple inches.
