Another update since it’s been a while, it wasn’t the vacuum pump according to the mechanic. He drives a BRZ too so that helps a little with familiarity of engine noises. Now I am thinking could it be right side exhaust manifold leak? I know it can make a ticking sound when it is not seated properly.

New update: I took it back to the shop since the noise was still bugging me. Pretty much I had to replicate the noise for the shop for them to hear it better. They thought it was a cylinder misfiring, but no CEL. So far he did a compression test and PSI was all good. He checked my spark plugs and one of them was fouled. Now my next concern is how could this happen? He mentioned I'm burning a little more oil than usual since hes last checked my car since hes the one that changed out my oil. He said the car is running better now and to monitor my oil consumption. My previous engine that blew did not really have an issue with consumption. He also discovered that the used motor that was dropped into my car did not have the foam insulation that the injectors have to dampen the sound. He said that could be a huge reason as to why I'm hearing the noise even more. Any input would be great! Thank you all.

I listened again and my opinion hasn't changed. It sounds like bad valve lash. Can you get another experienced person to listen to it? Pull the engine and look under the bank-1 valve cover.

I’m starting to suspect something with the valves. It would sorta make sense if the compression test results came back as normal right? Seals maybe? He recommended a catch can but even with my old motor I didn’t need one. I don’t really know any other Subaru specialist in my area so I’ll be looking around.

Not seals. That's a bad mechanical clatter. No, a compression test is not conclusive for this. Doesn't need to be a subie specialist. It just takes someone with a decent ear for this stuff.

Diagnosing it as valve adjustment is one thing, getting it adjusted in another. Going to need the dealer or a subie shop for that one.

The valves aren't "adjusted" like a Honda. There's a shim on top of the valve. Say spec is .015, you measure .030 lash. The shim installed is .045. So you order a .060 shim, put it in and remeasure. Now it's .010, pull that shim, reorder a .055, install, recheck, etc etc etc.

Now do that for every single valve.

You really need a tray of shims in front of you to go down the line. A normal shop isn't going to just have that laying around.

When I rebuilt my engine I really wanted to adjust the lash but didn’t want to spend the money on an assortment and didn’t want to measure order measure order. Another thing that sort of sucks is you have to glue everything together, check the lash and then pull it all apart again and clean all the sealant off just to throw it all back together and measure again. I guess you could dry fit but I feel the seal would change the lash a little so to do it right you really have to seal it. My lash was within spec so I just said to hell with it. I miss my old B18C where I could do an adjustment a few times a year if I really wanted to.

Agreed but if it truly is valve lash then it's something beyond simple shimming. These things don't just wander out of adjustment. I'm just suggesting a second qualified opinion. His guy is either clueless or dancing around the subject for some other reason.
