A civic which is the best selling car in America btw, has more torque than our cars. That's the 1.5t engine that is the majority of what I see in civics around me. Also the new camry also has way more torque than our cars.
Again, I am talking about torque here because OP drives a 2nd gen tacoma which has a lot of torque in the mid range which our cars do not have. In the tacoma, you do not have to bang off the limiter on an on ramp to merge at a sufficient speed.
So yes, the twins are harder to to reach a tough merge at a sufficient speed when COMPARED to a 4.0 tacoma. For example, a steep uphill on ramps that is also short distance.
Also, the new 3rd gen Tacoma's have a power band just like our cars. You have to be near redline to get power. So if you ever need a truck and like to bang off the limiter to get power, it would fit you perfectly.

I personally think wringing a car out because you have or you'll cause an accident isn't as fun as if you do it just because you want to. But I understand what you mean. In cars with more power you'll reach jail time speeds if you keep your foot in it for more than a few seconds. With the twins you get to enjoy going through the gears for longer without excessively speeding. As long as it's what you find to be fun, that's what matters
Ah ok gotcha!

OP, I went through the same thing you did a few years ago during the last model year of the frs. I kept convincing myself that I'll get used to the powerband and the car is about handling anyways.
That was 2.5 years ago and I actually did get used to the powerband. But it annoys me. I would say that I kept convincing myself that straight line wasn't important for a year. After that, I just got annoyed often and felt like I made a mistake buying this car over my other options.

It seems like you are convincing yourself to get the brz when you actually want the mx5.
Sorry if this thread has already discussed this. I didn't read through all the pages. I just have the same truck as you and know what the powerband is like. Having that pull feeling almost everywhere in the powerband (like the mx5 you said) is gonna keep you happy when there's no curves around.

Wow, 13 pages. I've heard less discussion from entire bridal parties about the dress choice.

My bad. Best selling in California. Swear I've seen reports saying the civic passed the camry in sales nationwide. Must've been in the half year sales reports or something like that.

Modern day turbocharged economy cars have absolutely wrecked the mindset of what is acceptable from a small displacement engine in peoples minds.

It's very hard to compete with peak torque at 1500rpm or near idle.

This and most people can't wrap their heads around a high revving NA car that's developed to make power at high rpms. It's not a cruiser, or tow truck. It's a sports car.

That sounds like fun. I wish we had on ramps like that. I'd be practicing my autocross launches and 2nd gear chirps all day long.

100% agree. if you think having to think ahead and plan your merge and revving your engine, shifting down etc is "effort" you should not be buying a true sports car.
Car manufacturers have brainwashed us into thinking muscle cars = sports cars. If you are a true car enthusiast, you will not find a big bhp car that is effortless to drive is fun. So you just push in the gas pedal 0.5" to merge and then have to slam on the brakes because you overshot.... why is that a good thing. I have to shift gears hundreds of times when I am stuck in traffic on my daily commute but I don't find that to be a chore. For me the deciding factor was that I actually love the looks of the BRZ. Its sleek and low and reminds of the 2nd generation MR2.

Agreed.
Despite the MX5 2.0L engine having better power delivery than the FA20 it also produces 20-25 less peak horsepower. 180hp vs 200-205hp depending on transmission.

The fact that the MX5 weights so little is what makes that package work so well.
