Midpipe Questions

Hey guys! I'm actually super new to doing -any- sort of thing to cars. I've done my fair share of research but, there's just some things I can't figure out...at least with this car.

I've read that the cats aren't on the midpipe and it's safe to swap it out. Anyway, I have a Borla Touring exhaust right now #11937.

So if I swap out the stock midpipe will I get any consequences? Because, honestly the warning on the page concerns me a little ;_;

"LEGAL ONLY FOR RACING VEHICLES THAT MAY NEVER BE USED, OR REGISTERED, OR LICENSED FOR USE, UPON A HIGHWAY."

Should I buy a resonated midpipe or?

As far as safety is concerned you will 100% be ok. Swapping the stock mid pipe for an aftermarket one will really just change the sound while getting negligible HP gains. Also not sure how much DIY experience you have, but make sure you install everything correctly so you don’t have any exhaust leaks. Very simple to do, good luck

Why are you thinking about changing it ...??

In other words, what is your objective ...??

Right now I'm just trying to make a liiiiittle more loud but, not loud enough to wake up neighbors haha.

Some gains are nice and those are just the added benefit honestly!

And honestly, just to add a little more volume to it.

Well, you have a few options.

1. Leave the damn thing alone ......(my recommendation ......)

2. Have your local muffler shop cut out the resonator and weld in a straight piece of pipe.

3. Buy and install an after market mid pipe.

You won't find an aftermarket midpipe that fit your Borla axle back
From the MY17 they changed the joint between midpipe and muffler and all the midpipes on sale on the market won t fit that without important modification to it

if you want it louder get catless front pipe, catless headers, or an axleback that doesn't do much muffling. adding and subtracting resonators wont make things quieter or louder, respectively. if they did, resonators would be called mufflers

Well, resonators make certain frequencies louder or quieter with the usual overall result being quieter due to destructive interference.

If you're looking for just a bit more noise you could try an axle back or a muffler delete. I went with the Nameless Muffled Track Pipe and got exactly what I was looking for, just some more noise. No change in drone or obnoxiousness.

By that reasoning a straight pipe will make things quieter. If you want it louder, get rid of mufflers. If you want it quieter, add mufflers or even cats. If you want it to sound different, fiddle with resonators. Resonators aren't mufflers. Just google it for christ's sake

You do know how sound waves work right? You are correct that resonators change the sound/pitch/frequency tube of vibrating air (car exhaust) makes. HOWEVER, the blanket statement that resonators cannot increase or decrease loudness overall is technically incorrect. Through destructive or constructive interference, one can absolutely reduce or increase maximum amplitude (loudness) of the output.

For example if the frequency of maximum amplitude is 10Hz, you can design a resonator specifically to cause complete cancellation of that frequency by creating 2 standing waves 180 degrees apart. Your next highest amplitude frequency becomes the highest at an overall lower amplitude. Et voila! You have decreased sound level using a resonator.

It's just science for Christ's sake.
