Especially now that they are interlocked so that it can not be opened doing 60 MPH. The top on my 64 Impala opened in about .06 seconds once.

@Coachrhino11 if you look at the "bare bones" of the car you can see why it would be expensive to add a moonroof. There would have to be some major structural changes by creating a frame for the moonroof or any other type of removeable roof for that matter. (remember we are talking factory additions here, not 3rd party that don't have to worry about things like longevity, safety cages, crash test results)

There was a rumor floating around at one point that the chassis was originally engineered to be made directly into a convertible without much change, but it was never substantiated I don't believe.

They could just make the roof panel removable. Or make two removable roof panels. While you'd still have the roof structure there, it would have the same feel as a targa I would think.

Yeah, I've seen the new Miata RF roof in action, and it's impressive. They did an outstanding job designing that. It was a contender for me when purchasing my new 86. If it was a new 86 feature in a future generation, they would have to forgo the back seat and add a few grand, but it would be worth it. The significant extra weight would probably need a power boost to compensate for it, though, so the current engine just wouldn't work.

That is exactly what it looked like after it went down in .06 seconds.

I was under the assumption that coupes were more desirable than convertibles.

Everybody loves a convertible, bit the trade off is that they are heavier... which contrary to the 86 concept.

Well now, I reckon that depends upon personal preference .....

For example ...... a miata can do anything that an 86 can do* ....... but an 86 can't do everything a miata can do ......

* edit ..... except carry 2 kids in the back seat.
