Friendly Competition Question

So I recently bought an automatic w/ paddle shifter 2016 BRZ limited and I am in LOVE with the car. My friend and I were talking about whose car is faster in multiple scenarios and having a bit of friendly wagers. So, my friend drives a stock '04 350z 6MT and the thing is pretty quick I'm not going to lie, but I'm pretty sure he can take me in a straight line. That being said, he bet me lunch on whoever wins in the drag race. In my defense, I bet dinner I take him on the track/back roads (I already have experience tracking the BRZ). We both agreed and are waiting for a weekend that we are both free, so my question to the forum is;

1. Will I have to buy him lunch after the drag race?

2. Will he have to buy me dinner after I take him on the track/back roads?

pretty sure the answers are obvious but I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks

Look here for similar questions. Im sure a Z thread already exists.

Also, no street racing and I imagine this qualifies as such

Well as a pure bench racing exercise without considering driver ability or condition of his 13 year old car it looks like you will be buying lunch at least once.
DO NOT drag race on the street!

1. Probably.
2. Depends on who has better tires and bigger balls.

I'm sure you'll be racing on both an actual drag strip and track, so we can have this discussion.

At the strip, you'll lose pretty handily - he'd have to miss a shift or two for you to win. The VQ is a stout engine, despite the Z's heft.

On the track, it depends a lot more on the driver and the type of track you're running. If it's like VIR Full and has two very long straights, he'd probably beat you even if you were a significantly better driver. If it's a short technical course, you'll stand a much better change and can probably win if you're the superior driver.

Our cars are great at punching above their weight class in sections that are technical, but when you come to a straightaway or any other horsepower-loving section, other cars are much quicker.

In a straight line, the 350z would win even if he missed a shift or two. [For reference I used to own a 350z (vq35hr, 6mt) and test-drove an automatic FR-S at Scion's first drive event. It's a big difference between the two.]

On a track, tires and driver will be the deciding factor. If those are equal, the 350z will win again unless it's a very tight technical track.

Very true statements if we consider the Z as a tip top condition perfectly running car. The fact that it is 13 years old and has probably had a hard life (I can make assumptions as well) may play into this particular bench racing scenario. It would only take a bit of carbon, some burnt valves, a worn clutch, or a multitude of other possibilities to even the playing field with a much newer BRZ. It would probably still beat it in the straight line but it could be a lot closer that we would guess and even a minor error could close the gap and give a surprise win.

If you want a drag car you should've bought a Mustang 5.0.

I have a '13 BRZ 6MT and a '04 350Z 6MT. Even with a JRSC on the BRZ, the 350Z wins a drag but I think the BRZ will probably beat it on a track (especially if the track is more about the curves than straights.). The 350Z has so much more torque especially on the lower RPMs. The BRZ handles better but the 350Z can make up for some of the handling because of being able to use the torque to compensate for the handling deficiencies as compared to the BRZ. Same tires on both (PSS).
