From what I can tell it's legal because mustangs are legal and they're red.

Rear turn signals are only allowed to be red in US and Canada. However, "A 2008 U.S. study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests vehicles with amber rear signals rather than red ones are up to 28% less likely to be involved in certain kinds of collisions,[68] and a 2009 NHTSA study determined there is a significant overall safety benefit to amber rather than red rear turn signals."

Did you clearcoat them or did you only use the VHT to make them red? because the clearcoat makes a huge difference in how glossy they are and it also helps to protect the color.

I left mine to cure for 48h before reinstalling them (which was probably more than needed) but my clearcoat said 24h to cure completely i think.

If you are unsure check the can of the paint you used and there it should say how long it takes for it to harden completely, if not then go on the website of VHT and check there.

Paint or tint Tail light housing

Hey guys what do you think about painting/tinting the chrome housing of the stock jdm tail lights... So the housing will look like a smoked chrome look, with the white reflector on the side of the tail light smoked also...

I want to do this to my car, but mine is Ultramarine. So it would kinda look like this...

This. I did the metal cast and spraymax 2k route. I could have mixed some clear and sprayed them but the spraymax is cheaper and easier than mixing some up and cleaning out the gun afterwards. A buddy saw mine and thought I shot the clear with a gun. The trick is spraying wet coats without running.

Taking the plunge this weekend to perform this DIY on my car. Is it required to wetsand and polish the taillights at all? I see a few finished products posted by other members that show both clear and hazy tail lights without wetsanding at all...would that be due to improper prepping (cleaning the tails before painting) ?

The haze is usually from not clear coating them. If they've been cleared and are hazy then it's from putting dry coats of clear on. My pictures from above are with clear and no wet sanding. Wet sanding after clear is only needed if there's some dirt in the clear or it's not as slick as you want. I.e. Orange peel or dry spray.

Big thanks for the additional information. I guess the hard part is clear coating them. I'm not too keen on painting or plasti-dipping with aerosol cans. When you're painting the red or clearcoat, are you pressing down on the nozzle intermittently? Or is your finger always held down for the whole duration through each layer you're spraying?

Clearcoat is not hard with spraymax2k, it sprays like any other spraypaint. I would recommend doing it outdoors no where near any other cars or objects that u care about possibly getting molecules of clear coat on. I also wore a respirator and long sleeves.

People who have commented on mine in person all thought they were either aftermarket or shop sprayed.
