Unfortunately, and like it or not (I don't particularly but I've been on the other side of this fence) this isn't completely at the say of the company. There are Federal Labor Law rules they are threading here. If you treat a contract employee the same as a company employee at some point you cross the line and run afoul of the contract labor laws that are designed to prevent the hiring company from calling all their workers contractors and not have to pay certain taxes and benefits.

I'm assuming this is a corporate sponsored or at least expensed event. If its just a bunch of buds getting together on their own dime then those laws don't allow.
