Moto east and Map Performance turbo brz build
At the start of this thread i'd like to thank Mister Michael Mann @ Moto-East and Ian and Nate at Map performance
So lets kick this off. This car Started out in 2014 as a daily driver First thing i did to the car Was a set of KW V3 coilovers then wheels and tires and at this point as most of you know, the need for more power comes into play. I started off with a Sprintex 210 Blower I needed more power went to a 335 the car with the 335 Made around 276 Wheel Horsepower on a mustang dyno. While driving along at above 120 MPH the car developed a tick. Turns out that "tick" was actually piston slap. So off to moto east it went to begin forming a plan. (pictured below are the pistons) We went with the obvious idea of building the motor and pairing that with the best modification you can do to your frs/brz Which is of course the Map Performance turbocharger kit with a garret Gtx3076R all this came ready to run out of the box so the turbo components were set aside and the teardown began Heres an Exert From Michael Mann about the state of the motor "So we tore down a motor today from a pretty nasty engine failure. Amazingly it did not blow a hole in the block, but the carnage is quite impressive. What stands out here is that there are 0 signs of knock, no pits in the piston tops or valves, no ring land damage at all except where the piston gouged into the bore. What we're thinking is either a severe overheat due to sustained high speed/high boost operation without an oil cooler on pump gas, or possibly too tight of ring gaps from the factory leading to this failure when combined with the high temperature condition. ALL pistons showed scoring. All rods are bent" to remedy this the block was honed out .5 and the following parts were used in the motor Cp pistons 11:1 carrillo rods OEM bearings oem valves GSC springs Oem rockers all new oem seals The car is currently making 527 due to running out of injector at the top. Stick around for an update on the 600 mark and where we take it from there! Um, Wow... Those rods just made to 1000% paranoid now.
276WHP Mustang is around 300WHP Dynojet. I wonder how many people her have bent rods that don't know it and their car is pushing 400+WHP? The factory rods really look like a ticking time bomb. Time to stop driving the car until I save the rest of the cash for the build. Thank you Moto East for this write up. HUGE +1

Do you think the bent rods here are a result of so much low end torque from the 335 blower?
I know you only had 276whp up top, but my guess is you were pushing at least that much in torque fairly low in the rev range as well. Additionally, would you venture to say that a centrifugal setup that makes that same hp up top would be safer for the engine, as lower RPM torque is less? |

Why does low end torque promote the inevitable reaction of a bent rod? Is this just a native problem Subaru/Boxster engines succumb to or is this a global/standard rule when going the FI route? Being that the S/C is always applying load to the engine, is this problem more common in S/C kits rather then Turbo kits? Thanks!

Moto,
I'm unsure if you have any knowledge or experiences with the two but how do you think this Kit compares to the JDL and FBM kit? Pro's/Con's so far about this kit? Did you have to modify the crash beam for this install? Side note: I do like how the IC pipe is positioned over the cool side of the turbo..looks very nice.

Yes, two small notches need to be cut out of the rear of the crash beam to clear the intercooler piping. We do have an optional tubular crash beam bar that is a direct bolt on if you wish not to cut into your factory one.
