Motortrend: 2016 Mustang GT350R vs. 2015 Camaro Z/28

Good way to kick off your Thanksgiving day! The matchup a lot of people have been waiting for. I still prefer the powerband and sound on the Chevy LS7 engine, but the GT350R looks to be the better overall package for the money.

The 2015 Camaro looks kind of ehh to me. They toned down the looks of the fifth-gen by several notches and everytime I see one, I couldn't care less even if it was an SS. But that LS7 though... even if it's 9 years old at this point, it's still a great sounding motor and there's lots of aftermarket support.

The Mustang on the other hand... I already love its looks despite what people say (even the front end), so I definitely enjoy the GT350. I love the fact that it can do more with less, and the quote that "there's no replacement for displacement" doesn't seem to be true anymore... And the sound is eargasmic... just as much if not better than the LS7.

It would be very hard to decide between these two... but considering that the GT350R is about ten grand less, I might go with the 'Stang. It's a hell of a time to be a Ford fan (not that I am one).

The GT350r is going to get BTFO when the new Z28 equivalent is released.

I finally got a chance to check out a new Alpha Camaro and I personally think it's much better inside and out compared to the new mustang.

The camaro is beginning to be a dated platform with the new 2016 coming out. I would love to see the new Z/28 put up against the new GT350.

Good luck finding a GT350 at or near MSRP. Where I live they will be $10-40K over MSRP.

The markup on the Mustang wont last long. Everyone raved about the Z28 when it was introduced but David Maus Chevy had two 14's sitting in the showroom both eligible for the 15% model year end closeout when 15's where arriving.

No official word yet on an alpha based Z28 but I would not be surprised if the 427 is retired.

Unless GM makes a new 7.0 liter engine based on the Gen V LT family, I would not be surprised either. Powerful as the LS7 is, it's a nearly ten year old design that makes less power than the GT350's 5.2L engine.

Chevy just dropped $25K off the MSRP of the remaining 15 Z28's.. You gotta feel for people who paid MSRP or markup on their Z28 when they were in more demand. Something tells me that you will be able to get one of these used for the $40k range soon. Crazy...

Whoa, I didn't know about the carbon fiber wheels on the GT350R. Or the 8000rpm limit for that matter...

It needs a better sounding exhaust though :/ too much buzz.

Brand new Z/28s are selling for $55k right now, and I doubt a single GT350R will be selling at anything other than over MSRP this year.

Next up: Chevy answers back with the new Z-28 based on the smaller and lighter 2016 Camaro. Stay tuned.
