The paperwork didn't say anything about goodwill work when I got the car back. I was three days away from going the lemon law route. This was May of 2013 and the car had about 27k miles on it. 5k miles later, the engine blew. I thought it was funny that Toyota had no problem rolling out the red carpet for those of us "lucky" to be First 86ers, then alienated us once they had our money.
I would wager they warrantied it and the service writer was trying to get more business out of you by seeming generous. No dealership would do engine work out of the goodness of their heart. It's expensive.

Tracking your car does not void your warranty.

How dare you accusesomeone that knows cars as well as an IROC-Z owner use scare tactics on customers!?!

/sarcasm

I agree with you 100%, but for someone that either doesn't know any better or would've been too frightened to say anything would've just bent to the pressure. I made it perfectly clear after the car was returned to me that they will never see me again and I will recommend no one to their store.

Any time I met an IROC Z owner they were easily identifiable as the biggest tool in the room. It's like they're magnets for scumbags.

I'd say take them to small claims court to get your money back for the repairs ,and file complaints with the FTC and NHTSA (safecar.gov)

Who supplied you with the letter stating the warranty was voided?

They didn't. They couldn't supply much of anything, aside from BS excuses. I don't want to take the thread even further off track but I didn't pay a cent for the repairs.

Its sad to hear such service. Hopefully in the future you dont run into a similar situation. Its hard to make the system work properly when certain individuals either abuse it or simply dont know how to do their jobs.

So as far as the expected "ticking" noises in this engine go... is it normal that I only hear it with the engine under load, between 2000-3000 rpm? Could it be an exhaust leak at the manifold?

Exhaust manifold leak was on my list as well, but it turned out to be a rocker and grenaded the engine.

I get this ticking/tapping sound from the engine sometimes when I do HARD driving under very hot weather (+90F). The frequency of the tapping sound goes along with the engine speed too.

It goes away after awhile though.

The ticking/tapping sound came on again the other day during the canyon run. It was HOT outside around 100. Had my A/C on. The tapping sound was pronounced on throttle and no sound when coasting.

Anyone knows about this? Thank you!

Try recording it... My sound only came on after the car was hot. It doesn't happen when it's cold.

It also happened when I reved in neutral/park. But under load, the car noises drowns it out so it's hard to listen for it.

I think I posted in here earlier (getting old) but I have heard/felt the hard knock but it only happens at around, IIRC, 3500 RPM. I wonder if it isn't a bubble trapped in the valve timing mechanism. I've only heard it twice and both times it was super hot and immediately following some "spirited" twisties.
