BRING OUT YER DEAD!
I used to be an adventurer like you... but then I put mismatched Brembos on my 86.

Everything I have read and found researching says for any type of racing/track application you should use slotted and not drilled rotors.

I will contact the current owner of my BRZ and make sure he is alive and that he knows he is at risk.

I have the full STI swap on my BRZ with flipped (correct for rotation) front calipers. (Still alive, btw)
Pedal travel did not increase noticeably, and is firm. Also there were no problems bleeding the front calipers. Stopping is quick and predictable, not just in city driving, but also in spirited street driving and AutoX. Hard stops with ABS actuation is also predictable. I've experienced both front-first and rear-first ABS activation. Both times the car behaved predictably with no bad behavior. Additionally, rear stability control works exactly as with the stock rear calipers. I've used both aggressive AutoX pads and performance street pads with no bad or unexpected results. I would consider this swap perfectly safe for anything short of a serious track application. As for track use, I have no experience with this swap, but I would not expect any issues for the occasional track day with the appropriate pads. Ultimately, the only people who really would be effected by the small issues of this swap are those that are probably looking at bigger more race-focused kits anyways. I would have no problems recommending this swap to someone who wasn't a track day enthusiast. |

I died in a fireball from this upgrade. Just FYI.
What a bunch of utter nonsense in this thread. The article is biased because they are partnered with Brembo. Do I believe everything the FDA says when the controlling board is Monsanto? NO! Do I believe Brembo when they say that these are unsafe to use on the twins so you will buy an $8,000 BBK instead? HELL NO! Any competent troglodyte can see through the smoke here. -Were the STi brakes designed for the twins? No, they were not. -Well then they shouldn't be used then. Not necessarily. All you have to do is swap bleeders to keep correct piston orientation. -But the crossover is now at the highest point in the caliper. UNSAFE! True, it is now at the high point of the caliper. Not ideal, but it can still be properly bled manually. Wanna know what else is at a high point? The brake line! My SS line is actually higher than where that crossover is in the caliper. Properly breed inner and outer bleeders with a friends help and you will virtually remove ALL air from the system. But theres kits now designed to be used with the twins! -Great, and there are tons of vendors to choose from if you wish to go that route. BUT THE BIAS WILL NOW BE OFF! -omg rly? HEAT CAPACITY! APPLIED TORQUE! BRAKE FADE/FAILURE! MORE BUZZWORDS! - 15k on fronts only. Hawk HPS 5.0 compound F/R. EXCELLENT brake feel and bias feels VERY close to stock. Junk OE front calipers were sticking and leaking at 25k. This is a very worthwhile upgrade for street and mild track use. This thread is cancer. |

We don't have to get rowdy here. I think we just need to have a little perspective.
As enthusiasts, we concern ourselves with the final 20%. Power, handling, braking, we live in the final 20% that most other people never even see. How much does break-in or one oil over another TRULY effect our cars? But we argue amongst ourselves about things that, even in our world, are small differences. So let's keep in mind, that for all but the most strenuous of uses, the idiosyncrasies of this swap represent the merest fraction of overall performance. |

This is gonna sound harsh, but quite frankly, if you can "get away" with Hawk HPS (a street pad), on a (race) track, even for "mild" track use, you're not qualified to be making statements on the useability or safety of a brake system at all. A novice with a single session of instruction on proper threshold braking will DESTROY HPS on a STI brembo setup, stock calipers, or even a AP Sprint or $8000 Brembo setup. One session of instruction. |
