The main gating issue for me though isn't lack of power. It's the lack of a Miata coupe for track days.

For a company that likes to brag the Miata is the most popular track car in the world, this seems a bit ironic.
everyone grabs flavor of the month, or abuses said build atm with said car.

Wait, 155 HP from an NA 2.0? That's pathetic. You have to try to make power figures that underwhelming. They should have jammed a Renesis in it if power expectations were so low.

A: The power figures are not confirmed. They are lifted from the specs from the current "3" and that engine also makes it's power at 6k and makes 150Tqs at 4k rpm. That's the same amount of Torque as the FRS engine at 2k rpms lower. It also does this on regular unleaded. The 3 also weigh 2850lbs and gets 41mpg with a Manual Transmission. Remember, part of the "ethos" of the Miata is the word "economical".

B: "A" doesn't really matter anyway because a car that'll be lighter than the FRS and make the same torque which would be quite nice around town as well as being able to pump regular unleaded instead of premium. However, I doubt they will just drop in the engine from the Mazda 3 'as is'. It will probably make more power, it will probably require premium.

But, if they DO just use the 155hp/150tq engine from the Mazda 3 I think that would be just fine. It's a goddamn miata, not a muscle car.

Edit: C: They're not trying to make 155hp w/ a 2.0L engine. That's a bit myopic. They're trying to hit CAFE standards; emission and mileage. 41mpg with a manual transmission on a 2850lb car with regular unleaded (@ 13:1 CR) while meeting emissions regs is a rather impressive task.

I bet they got that number from Mazda, it's the power rating for the current SkyActiv 2.0 in the 3.

I would be surprised if they aren't able to get at least current NC Miata level of 167hp out of an updated or Miata-specific SkyActiv 2.0.

They really should drop a retuned-for-high-end-power 2.5 in there though as an option. It would be fantastic to have a reasonably-priced minimalist 240hp 2400-lb sports car on the market...
how can a big company come out and say things like "not sure where they got that number"

Their way of saying "hey, we never told anybody this car would have 155hp", without suggesting that somebody naively took the figure from the Mazda3 specs. Because surely no one is *that* stupid, right? (wink wink nudge nudge)
