If the time line catches up to 2013, Bunta would have seen the R32 that came out 25 years ago!

Either way, I was expecting this a long time ago. I was thinking he'd be handed the keys to one.

Well, yes and no. First stage came out in 1999. The R32 GT-R debuted in 1988 and was 276 HP. And like a lot of the AWD cars it's a heavy sucker. In comparison to sports cars that had a little less HP and were a lot lighter I guess that would mean in Bunta's eyes it was slower. It depends on what kind of cars he had access to at the time the R32 GT-R was made. Bear in mind of course that if Takumi was 18 during the first stage. That would mean he was 7 or 8 when the car came out. So at the time of his race against Nakazato the R32 is already a 10 or 11 year old car. That would mean the R33 was at it's end and the R34 was ready to be built. However, Project D started 1 year or so after Takumi's first official race. Due to production limits though it only seems like a long time. In all actuality in terms of the shows timeline it's been less then 3 years. So Bunta was already in his late 30s or early 40s by the time of the first episode.

So basically the earliest the series could have taken place was 2000-2002 (newest car shown in the series was the Z33) and the latest 2012-2014, a two year span. Up until the last five minutes of the last episode it seemed as though 2000-2002 would make much more sense, however somebody somewhere in the earlier episodes could have mentioned the specific age of one of the cars - providing some sort of reference. But i suppose at that point we would be nit picking. "Playing along" with the creators of the show, we would assume that the time line was 2009-2011.

Or something.

I am quite sad that the series is over, but the writers left it in a state where there can be a spin off or maybe even a possible reboot to where they can take the story further. I like how it shows that Takumi gets to enjoy a balanced life with a girlfriend and I think that he joined up with a drifting group was great. He still delivers tofu, but I think it's more for maybe practice or meditation than money. I wonder if he kept his day job or quit that to go pro in drifting. Also, my imaginary future episode would show Takumi fixing up the AE86, giving the Subaru back to Bunta and then buying a GT86. I think that it would make the story go full circle.

Just saw the last episode, yesterday. I'm glad I didn't click on the this thread until afterwards. I was definitely surprised to see that at the end.
