Reading through a UK forum, where they also have smog tests, one of the outstanding results was to lower the emissions by at least 50%.

Yep. I've got a 4 oz bottle from a previous fuel additive that has the ounces marked on the side. I fill that from my quart of valvoline 2 stroke oil and leave it in the car; that gets me through two tanks of gas.

Guess I'm going to be trying TC-W3 ("Supertec" or Walmart Synthetic ashless). I'm gonna try 1.5oz (or 1 shot glass lol) for the whole tank and see what happens. Everything I'm reading about it from multiple forums have told me that there's no ill effects (from VW to rotary to maxima). The additional benefit also from what I've been reading is it quiets down engine a lot. Adding it before the next fillup so it mixes better. Will report back.

So I'm using Pennzoil TCW3, 2 oz in full tank. Crickets are back on tank 3 but very quiet. Weather is warmer. My first 2 tanks were heavily city driving but mileage was on par. Back now to so more regular type of driving. Looking forward to taking a 5 tank average.

I cannot categorically say TCW3, at least at the amount of 2oz/10gallon, is the solution for the crickets but I can say even when they are there, they are hardly audible.

I know the reasons for using TCW3 is zero ash and water cooled combustion temperature specifications, also synthetic is always considered the best, however.

There have been negative reports using fully synthetic 2 stroke oil, mainly in diesels but it's still relevant. The negative suggests that FS does not combust as completely as mineral or part synthetic oil.

The vehicle that replaced my 86 has the VW 2L diesel engine amd I use 2 stroke oil at 1:200 in the tank. I tried TCW3 fully synthetic and noticed it was noisy from cold, although the noise was gone very quickly, so changed back to low ash mineral 2 stroke oil and the noise has gone.

There is ash in the fuel and the amount of ash from the oil at these tiny levels is miniscule by comparison. So perhaps low ash mineral or semi synthetic 2 stroke oil might be the best version to use? It's certainly the most common version used in diesels.

I bought the Pennzoil Semi-Syn TCW3, not the full syn.

In my googling it seems that the 1oz/5gal recommendation is that of a starting point and some engines like less while others like more. I've done 1 in 5, 1 in 10 and on this last tank went back to 1 in 5. I may add a bit more on the next fill up like 1.5 in 5.

It's

7 Tank fills before the switch:
31.5
27.5
31.5
31
29.1
29.4
28.7

AVERAGE: 29.8

The 3 Tanks with the switch:
28.7 T2 synthetic 1oz/5gal (Very little freeway)
30.2 T2 synthetic 1oz/5gal (Mixed driving)
28.3 TCW3 SemiSyn 1oz/10gal (essentially no freeway)

AVERAGE: 29.06

I'm a quarter through tank 4 on TCW3 and it looks like I will probably land in the 29-30 range on this tank as well. Tank 5 will get 3oz/10gal.

When I get to go racing again and I tow long trips with the Van, I'll be interested to measure that. I usually get 10-11mpg when towing, no matter how easy I try to be on the gas. If I saw 12 or better I'd jump for joy but I do know this made my van feel like I added 25ft/lbs of torque. It was a very distinct improvement illustrated by how little it needed to downshift from OD to climb. Very pleased.

A few people have mentioned using Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant. Seems to be a descent pesticide for these crickets. Plus I get better gas mileage

I have used it in my other cars in the past along with the BRZ. Works very well. I would suggest buying a gallon of it from amazon and buying one of the small bottles so you can refill it. Much safer than any 2 stroke oil in my opinion.

I think you're the first post to get positive results with it compared to 2 stroke oil. It costs a lot more and you can't get an analysis to see what you are putting into the fuel as you can with 2 stroke oils. It certainly contains sulphur which I think causes ash which you need to minimise with the cats.

Did a lot of reading on this and I'm gonna give it a try. Anyone using it with E85? Does it affect your mpg either way?

~$12 at Walmart for a gallon, and you use ~2 oz per tank. The only hassle I see is somehow adding 2oz every fillup. TC-W3 is supposed to be very safe, quote I pulled from BITOG:

Quote:
The TC-W3 standard calls for oils that contain "ashless dispersants". In other words, they're meant to burn off virtually completely, not leaving deposits in the CC or the cats.

I use a 4 oz bottle from another fuel additive. It's see through, with measurements on the side. That gets me for two fill-ups, then I have to fill the small bottle from my quart of TC-W3.
