After much deliberation and reading, I decided to just do this mod. And I'm not going back. I pride myself on being a smooth driver, and I didn't even need to adjust. My up shifts and downshifts just feel right after this mod. Timing feels so natural now. Reading through this thread addressed all my concerns.

I think the problem with the helper spring is that it makes the pedal return just a bit slower, so that grey area between clutch disengagement and engagement takes that much longer. That results in the rough takeoffs and jerky shifts.

I ended up taking the c-clip off by using two flatheads. One as a lever to hold it in place, and the other to push the opposite end out. Crude, but it worked.

As someone else mentioned, I did this, pedal height adjustment (1-2 mm above brake), Pentosin MTF2, and MTEC springs. "Car should have been like this from the factory"

As far as stiffness, I'd say it's about 15-20% stiffer now. But most importantly, the pedal action feels linear, and you can feel the clutch engage near the top. I don't even have to think about shifts or stare at the tach from a standstill anymore.

If you cant bear the stiffness, adjust your seating position and don't skip leg day.

Had a look under the there today with the intent of removing the spring, does anyone have a metal bracket on either side of their clutch mechanism? i can see the helper spring up the back and have almost no access to it? RHD car if that makes a difference

I gotta say, I was a bit sceptical about doing this, but after removing it today, I'm a believer! Improvement in feedback is great. It doesn't take long to get used to the slack in the first 1/2" of travel, either.

Just had to chime in once more... after just one night of this mod, you couldn't make me go back to stock. I would sooner sell my car than undo the pedal height adjustment, helper spring delete, put back the stock shifter springs and OEM MTF and drive like that.

In fact, I loved the Pentosin fluid and MTEC springs so much that I grinned like an idiot while testing them out. But you couldn't make me decide between keeping those two or the lowered pedal height and helper spring delete.

It's that good. Upshifts and downshifts feel involuntary and so smooth. I only stalled 3-4 times in 1,600 miles (I remember each instance ) but now I think it would be impossible to do so.

Still not convinced? I'd rather drop a bowling ball on my junk than revert to stock. DO IT... or at least try someone's car who has it done.

In my car, I noticed that when the clutch was fully depressed (and the return spring thus fully extended), there was a metal bracket obscuring access to the top pin (to push it out). I had maybe a inch or so of clearance between the passenger side of the pin, and the bracket.

I did the same thing myself, but it was the easiest way to get it out that I could think of. Worked perfectly (and quickly).

Many thanks to MikeyBRZ for the original post, and all others who commented... this improved the car so, so much.

I removed the clip and pin with the clutch pedal up, spring compressed.

I tried it this way, and couldn't get my giant hands in there at the same time. I ended up wedging a big flathead under the clip and prying to bend it out of the way.

Anyone have an update to this?

The clutch would be so much better without the spring!

It looks like a clutch prison there in my GTS86

If you guys could take pictures, and/or get a diagram e-mailed from your local Toyota dealer maybe we could see what's going on.

This is what the bracket looks like on a LHD:

It's in the way, but it just makes it trickier. If the bracket is no different, then I think it's just more difficult because the RHD pedal assy is in a tighter spot due to being closer to the driveshaft tunnel.

I've done the spring removal for a couple of friends. The only person I know that didn't like this change was the guy who learned how to drive stick on his FR-S (with the helper spring in)

I'm thinking with the pedal depressed, you could stick the spring in and force the top spring seat in. Not sure though.

I've never had anything but manual my whole life, looks like the spring goes!

I'm reasonably sure that you could compress the spring with zip ties to get it all back together.
