Tried to prevent rust, may have made it worse...

So the metal pillars on the window of my scion frs had rust after one winter. This is due to the window sill trim rubbing against the metal pillar and leaving bare metal exposed to salt and moisture.

I had both pillars replaced by Toyota but decided to get a shop to install some clear bra on them to try and prevent it from happening again by protecting the painted metal from getting rubbed by the window sill trim.

Unfortunately the shop did not do a good job and the clear bra doesn't extend below the window trim. On top of that, the shop caused a tear in the window sill trim that I am concerned is going to get worse as it flaps in the wind pulling on it more. I argued with the shop, but there is nothing they can do.

Will the tear in the window trim be a problem? And if so should I try and get it replaced?

Should I also remove the clear bra as I don't think it is going to be useful?

I'd be unhappy with the tear for sure. Not sure if it'll cause further issues, but it seems like it could (easier for whatever to get in there, noisier, ???).

I've been waiting to decide what to do about my rusty pillars.

I love this car, but I am kind of disappointed about the growing list of issues with no solution from the manufacturer. Crickets, tail light condensation, rusty pillars, and ????

It'd be nice if they truly care for the enthusiasts who have bought this car if they would actually solve these things correctly and fix them for us.

Yes, I definitely agree with you. I love this car but having to deal with rust 6 months into ownership was shocking. Even replacing the parts are only a temporary solution as the rust will come back after next winter. The window sill trim should not be rubbing on the pillars where it strips the paint, as it is a design flaw.

Don't know what I'm going to do about the tear, might just wait and see if it gets worse. If it does I will have to get it replaced.

I have an appointment with the dealer on the next friday for the same problem, and also for the scratch into my windows, i don't know if they will replace the pillar but i hope.

Now we need to find the best way to prevent this... maybe an good anti rust on the bottom of the pillar many time during winter?

I know some user have applied 3M on it and they have maybe solved the problem, you say that thing did not work for you?

Also have the rusty pillars and scratches on window, might get them to look at it next time. Like someone else said though, it won't last long. Hell I've had my car for 8 months.

The dealer should replace the pillars under warranty for you guys. It is not just the pillar though as it is connected to the triangle glass piece as well. The normal 3 year comprehensive warranty covered it for me.

The clear bra should be applied only when the window sill trim is removed or else it will be too hard to get below the contact point. If you do that I think it is the best solution as the rust is caused by the trim rubbing the black paint and exposing bare metal to the salt and moisture.

I had my window sill trim replaced and the new trim piece sits barely on the clear bra I had applied. I think it should be good for next winter as long as I keep that area clean.

I have mentioned the problem to my dealer also and they will replace my pillars
I have asked to add some 3M before reinstall everything to prevent this thing happen again.

Nice, I am really glad to hear that they are replacing it for you under warranty. Getting the 3M added should help prevent it as well
