When I shift, it grinds?

Any time I shift from 3rd to 4th at high revs, it grinds badly.

I bought the car used a month ago with 13,000k miles. It was my first manual car. The gears grinded the first week when I had a speed run and thought it was my human error, as well as me getting used to the car. It happened a few times after and its week four of owning it. I took it to the Toyota dealership but for some reason it smoothly shifted every time. The service technician rode with me and he even drove. No dice, no grind. He convinced me that it may be my own fault and that I am just getting used to it. I left thinking that it was my own fault and drove home shifting quickly grind-free. The next day (today), I shifted at high revs to 4th and it grinded. Anyone else having/had this issue?

Transmission oil changed? And 13,000k miles on it already, who knows what the previous owner did to it...

Also, any other gears grind? I've heard of some issues with 5-6 and a few with 3-4, could be one such case.

Bit notchy sometimes, but butter smooth at other times. Third and fourth are the only problems I can see.

Could just need a linkage adjustment.

take it in for service. should not be grinding like that..

Yep, like mentioned, it could be you're just getting used to shifting a MT.

Just be sure you are pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

You may consider changing the transmission oil to one of the "slicker" brands.

There is an outside chance the clutch system needs bleeding.

Also, like mentioned, check and adjust (if necessary) the clutch free play on each side of the engagement point.

I hope you get it sorted out.

Do you know if the previous owner did the clutch pedal adjustment? May be that the clutch isn't fully disengaging? Can't imagine its because of that if the rest of the gears are ok, but something to look at.

Try shifting a little slower into that gear when in that same situation. In my Evo, if I'm pushing it in fourth gear (meaning 5000 rpm or higher) then shift quickly into fifth, sometimes there's a slight grind. It doesn't happen when I shift a little more gently or a tad more slowly. However, in the Evo that I had before this one, I remember it would grind shifting into third when the car was new, but it went away after several months of ownership and was gone forever after I did the 15k service where the fluids were replaced.



But if it keeps happening, maybe your synchros are worn, though that's not the most likely scenario.

Not sure, but I would like to know. Even though I couldn't reproduce it, and it's my first MT, it doesn't make sense that it's only 4th gear grinding you know? If I didn't fully depress the clutch, wouldn't it grind in other gears too?

Not necessarily. Like I said in my post, only certain gears would grind in my car, at times. It might just be the gearing, and if one later gear is too tall/short (to the point where the gear ratios aren't spread evenly, which is the case in my car with fifth gear), then shifting in the exact same manner as you do for other gears when revving fairly high can sometimes lead to a grind.

Thanks for the reply and good info. What should I do if I like to rev high and not grind?

It depends on the gearing, but like I said, just try shifting more gently... meaning don't just slam it into fourth while snapping your feet on the pedals during the shift. I'd assume that slowing down your clutch engagement/disengagement will help a lot for that particular shift.

It does help if you slowly engage into 4th. I just thought it was made to quickly shift with no problem.

Only the the first three gears have triple syncros and are designed for "banging" gears but 4th, 5th, and 6th are only double, so like the other guy said, just slow down on shifting. You'll notice that the gears will go in a lot smoother with a lighter touch....do this even for the first 3 as well and your transmission will last for much longer time.
