You know I've been wondering about this, if I get a K&N filter can I just drop it in, expect a (very small I know) performance increase? Or do I need to get it tuned if I drop a new filter in? If I put in a K&N and don't get it tuned will it decrease performance from stock?

About 4-5hp with just installing it, which you CAN'T feel it.

No need a tune for a $40 filter brother.

You might feel a subtle difference in throttle response, but it won't feel "more powerful" necessarily. Ultimately mods like that are only one stage of the "breathing process" of your engine.

Real gains are only seen when all parts (airbox, filter, tube, headers, rest of the exhaust) are all made to be more free-flowing either through larger diameters or more efficient filters/catalytic converters, at which point you may notice some difference after tuning.

Occasionally one piece of the breathing system is more restrictive than the rest (in our case it's headers and potentially the frontpipe), so replacing those will have a significantly higher individual impact than something like the filter.

The K&N alone certainly does not need a tune.

Hope that helps!

This is why my exhaust mods will start with the headers and end with the cat back. I kinda wish I had waited to buy my intake, ideally I would have done that last.
