Another silly salesman story

Yesterday I had the day off and nothing to do so I decided to go window shopping for cars. While at Cascade Subaru, hoping to test drive a wrx, I noticed a silver BRZ. I wondered over to it and started looking around just for the fun of it. Naturally a salesman walked up and we started talking about it. He had something like "even with the CVT automatic they are still fun cars"....ummmm what? "they don't have cvt's, they have normal torque converter automatics", I said. "Noooo(with attitude), they are CVT's with paddles", he replied. "No, as far as i'm aware they are basically the same auto as a lexus ISF only without 7th or 8th gear". He turn and walks over to the brochure wall and brags the one for the BRZ, flips a few pages and starts reading. At this point i'm very focused on his facial expression because I know hes about to be proven wrong, he starts reading word for word. "Optional: 6-speed electronic automatic transmission with Sport mode, and
manual mode with paddle shifters with rev-matching downshift control", "Oh....I guess youre right", he says.

I had no intention on proving him wrong, but I had to set him straight.

I don't believe it is that closely related to the IS-F transmission (which is an 8 speed) - I think they are quite different units. It is definitely a 6 speed auto with a locking torque converter though...

Haha it's shocking to realize how some salespeople don't even know about the car they are selling... Kudos for for man!

Lol, a salesman who doesn't know his products shouldn't be in sales for very long

LOL. I had a Toyota salesmen (dude in his mid 20s) tell me that the automatic FR-S that they just got in that afternoon could outrun my (back then) Cobalt SS turbocharged (had GMS1, so 280HP/320TQ) in a straight line. He gave me a test drive (car had less than 50 miles on it) and he was red lining it the entire time. After the test drive, I got out and told him that I could still outrun this car in a straight line. He told me to bring my car around back and race -_-

I walked away and went to the Subaru dealership...

You should have just told him it's a regular Cobalt.

Except that it's not the same auto as an ISF, just shares some electronics, the trans itself isn't the same minus two gears...

The other time I went to the same dealership, one of the salesmen thought it was a Ford. Granted, it was a bit dark, but come on! The front emblem was gold!!!

Then there was this other time when I rolled up there in my BRZ and a (different) salesman came up asking me if I wanted to look at an FR-S. Told him that I had a BRZ that came better loaded and was less than what they wanted for a FR-S. Told him what I paid for the BRZ... yea, he shut up.

Now whenever I want to go look at Toyota/Scion vehicles, I go on a Sunday when they are closed so that they can quit embarrassing themselves...

Not to hijack this thread, but I also find it silly when people who don't own this car tell me about my car.

Popular comments:

1. Why did you get the FR-S, it doesn't even have a boxer engine...
2. The auto is faster because it has launch control
3. The FR-S is FWD, and the BRZ is AWD
4. How can you handle winter without any LSD?

You have to be able to educate your customer about the product. I agree that facilitating the transaction is a big part of sales, but how mad will a customer be when they don't get something promised because the salesman didn't know the details?

Anyways, I think it should be a requirement at a car dealer to learn your cars. Seems elementary IMO
