Spacers are fine. We recommend getting some extended studs and open ended lugnuts though, if you're using any more than 5mm. You want to make sure your lugs have enough turns.

@ImperiousRex's car is on 17x9 +45 RPF1 with 20mm spacers in the front in this video. ARP studs and open ended lugnuts as well.

thats the thing. i want a 10mm spacer but dont want to replace the studs (mainly because i might get different wheels in the future). so is the 5mm spacer safe with the factory studs?

I wouldn't recommend any hard driving on it.

What's wrong with replacing the studs? Studs are universal, regardless of the wheel you have. Alternatively, you can cut the studs shorter before replacing, if you want them to be shorter.

*edit* Oops, I've been informed he is on 20mm spacers.

I have 10MM extended studs and open ended lugs. They are safe if you have enough thread engagement on the lugs. See what Mike says below. I've seen some people do 3-5mm spacers on stock studs but I was not willing to try it.

I'm running ARP 10mm extended studs (don't have a part # for FR-S/BRZ but WRX/STi ones are the same) and H&R 5mm spacers. Since Mike helped in the thread you should buy them from him!

I think you're confused on the type of spacer. A 5mm spacer will be slip-on, not bolt-on. You don't need to worry about room on the backside of the wheel, because the wheel will be attached to the studs. For bolt-on spacers, 20mm will still stick out a bit and will need a wheel with pockets on the back; 25mm will clear the studs completely.

I have rpf1 17x7.5 +48
Would they poke too much with 25mm bolt on?

A 17x7.5 +48 with a 25mm spacer will put the wheel's outside edge at about the same spot that a 17x9 +42 does (difference of 0.05mm), so that should give you a reference to see if you like how it looks.

Here's an example, and one of my favorite cars on this forum. He's on 17x9+42 with 255/40 tires, and lowered about 1.2". If your car is lowered, then the wheels should be spaced about the same. If you want the back wheels to be similarly close to the fender, consider 30mm spacers on the back and 25mm spacers on the front.

Edit: For track usage, unless you actually need spacers to help clear suspension or brake components, I would take them off and run just the wheels. Under extreme stress, the spacers are just another potential point of failure, so if you can eliminate that, you should. They'd probably be fine, but why risk it if you don't have to? For daily driving, they'll be fine. I've been on 20/25mm spacers for two years now with no issues.
