I've watched all the crash test video I could find one night. The 86 is very safe from what I could see!

the commodore video is absolutely crazy. almost can't beleive people would drive around in metal coffins way back when. i'm really curious about the data from that frs side impact, i thought it would look worse

Try tapping the roof of your BRZ towards the center: it just keeps the rain off. Then tap the same way around the perimeter of the roof: that is a built in roll cage. Bonus, I believe the BRZ is already designed to accept a bolt in roll cage for serious track work. For ordinary track sessions this puppy is built to roll over and still protect you.

The point made about how dangerous trucks and minivans can be is well made. In fact, concern about the fatality rates in single vehicle and SUV to SUV collisions is causing the US government to rethink the exemption these "light trucks" enjoy. Fine if you want to take the risk but the trouble is when these primitive monsters hit a car the crush zones in the car act as big metal airbags for the SUV which has no such crush zones. In other words, the safety cage car you paid a lot extra to buy has its safety cell compromised by the absence of the safety cells in the light truck that hits you.

This is criminally unreasonable and should be changed but the US government has no intention of doing so as it would bankrupt the US auto industry. Almost all the profit the US auto industry makes is from selling these dangerous light trucks because they cost so little to build. The reference to the 50's Chevy is particularly apt sinc most light trucks use technology no more advanced than sedans used in the 50's. Body on frame with no crush zones at all. They have safer interiors and seat belts and airbags but the safety cage does not exist ina light truck. Dont' roll one unless you aren't in it at the time.

The industry is self policing to some extent by building "crossovers" which use sedan technology to protect the occupants. But this is just a sop to the legislators. Check the pricing of a crossover compared to a body on frame SUV and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Most light trucks remain death traps unless they hit another car.
