Another Toyota sports car in the making?

I just watched today's episode of Fast Lane Daily and I found out that Toyota was planning on launching another RWD Toyota sports car that will slot below the GT86/Fr-s.
Toyota has always had a trio of sports cars (Celica, MR2, and Supra) and the GT86/Fr-s is currently considered the middle of the next generation trio. Since Toyota has already (sort-of) planned a Supra successor, the only one left is the lower model sports car.
Some sources say it will be RWD while some suggest more along the lines of Celica. I'm curious to know what you guys think of a potentially cheaper RWD Toyota on the market. I mean the Fr-s is already slightly lacking in luxuries, what could Toyota do to make an even cheaper RWD sports car? Roll down windows? Comes with steel wheels standard? If we're lucky no back seats...

Thoughts?

pic unrelated... lol just a photo I found of a Celica concept

"The announcement hasn’t been made official just yet, but according to the guys at Car Advice, who have recently spoken to the Toyota GT 86 chief engineer, Tatsuya Tada, the company is currently considering the introduction of a new sports car, which should slot below the current GT 86. According to our source, the carmaker is looking for a three sports car lineup but the entry-level version of the Supra successor haven’t been officially approved for production. The new entry-level sports car will ride on a new rear-wheel drive platform and it will be co-developed with another carmaker."

"While speaking with CarAdvice, the man in charge of Toyota’s sports car division, Tatsuya Tada said, “Akio Toyoda [Toyota’s CEO] always says to me, Toyota sports car [family] should be three sports car brothers. 86 is in the middle.” From that statement, it can be concluded that a successor to the legendary Toyota Supra will be the top-of-the-range rear wheel drive sports car from Toyota."

Damn lower than the 86? I can’t think how they can make a cheaper RWD then the 86. It’s already considered cheap for this day and age.

Have a weaker engine? After 2015 it must have a backup camera. Maybe no cruise?

I have a strong feeling it's going to be the MR-2 again. I doubt the Celica, since majority of them are known for it's FWD. Yes there are AWD and the first few were RWD, but the last known Celicas were FWD.

So MR2

Why do people think they can't pull it off, or think it's not worth it. Take a look at how well Ford is doing with their Focus & Fiesta hatches. Pretty much the exact same cars, Fiesta is just smaller. I think it's a great idea. What i'm interested in is if they will bring it over here as a Toyota or a Scion.

If they were to make a new MR2 to go below the FR-S it would probably have an engine similar to the 1ZZ in power connected to a six speed gear box and probably only putting down a little over 100HP at the wheels. Anything more and it would be similarly priced with the FR-S.

Yeah, pretty sure that if you account for inflation the last gen mr2 was more expensive than the fr-s. Like I said to make it cheaper they would have to cut costs in other areas.
