It's interesting that the misfires I had were on cylinder 1 and all of the dealer coil replacements are on cylinder one as well.

What's special about cylinder one?

Dave-ROR 03-13-2013 01:30 AM

No idea why they seem to be cyl 1 specifically...

Dave you were running on the track when this CEL appeared correct?
Ultra were you also tracking your car?

I need to go to Dave's dealer. I made my second trip to the dealer today and got more questions about my ECU. They still haven't order the coil pack.

maybe poor airflow in comparison to the other 3 causes +1 to over heat. Which cylinder is #1?

BTW tracked the car in hotter weather both days this weekend, no CELs

Might have just been a bad coil afterall.

Cool, I'm hoping that's all it is.

I replaced my OEM coils Friday night with a set of Okada coils.
Hit the track Saturday and ran hard for 6 hours... No CEL.

I don't believe the OEM coils are well suited for track use.

specs on the Okada coils?

This is what I put in:

Looks like a cool product. I didn't see an application for the FRS/BRZ. Did you call them? How much for the set?

romin 04-01-2013 09:53 AM

Okada's web page isn't up to date - They do make a set for the BRZ/FR-S.
Here's where I got them:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ighlight=Okada

I figured the OEM coils are $110 each and have already displayed a life of about 7 months on the track, misfiring part of that time. On the other hand the Okada coils are about $200 each and seem to have a good reputation in stressful applications.

Sounds like a GREAT opportunity to approach the vendor with a GB order, if these work out for u I want a set for sure
who else?

Frostyman 04-01-2013 10:13 AM

whoah. one hell of a markup on that thread you linked. That takeda intake is normally around 350, not 400... I got mine for 150, just saying, might want to shop around a bit, gem.

The thread says PM for best price. Anyways that's not an outrageous price for what I've seen the Okadas go for. I've always they were snake oil but people have actually got good results out of them for the other Subaru models. The WRX/STi however never really have an issue ignition wise until you are at some enormous HP level.
