This is basically my thought on the subject.

Also my new rule anytime someone posts "pic for attention" in there facebook message, said message isn't worth reading.

Still not fair really. If they are building for likes or attention then that is their purpose. So it doesn't jive with the track guys, dd commoners, stance yo crowd's purpose so what? It is their car and their purpose no matter how silly that may be to others.

And for anybody that thinks this is a new thing then think again. There is a reason why once upon a time in the olden days there were over 500 different car magazines put out each month. The show guys always slammed the go guys and the domestics shit on the imports and so on. Sure now it is easier to do than before and people are exposed to more variations through the internet but still a case of the more things change the more they stay the same

But then again others have more important shit to do haha

I think people just generally don't like vanity or narcissism.

Even if they do it themselves, just as often.

Feel free to thank this post.

All about attitude, Jay Leno is a good example of someone who buys his cars but is respectable to most if not all who claim to be 'enthusiasts' in this hobby.

Also reminds me of Magnus Walker, but he gets more criticism...

^Just a few quotes I see around the internet daily that make me cringe.
You need to go to different parts of the internet.

Sure, not fair, but it's how I choose to find people to associate with and whose opinions I actually value.

Also i miss the magazine era. I feel like SCC got a lot of us started down the path of car building with technical articles and explanations.

Some of the best memories of my life are of my brothers, friends and I working on cars on the weekend over beer and pizza.

I do have a car that I take to the shop. My wife's Cruze. I bought my car as a retirement present for myself. It is now 16 years old so I am the warranty on it. I get great satisfaction out of keeping it purring or screaming depending on how hard I push the go pedal.

As T-coat said, this debate has been around forever. I don't think it is hurting the car scene. What is hurting the car scene is generations of young people who are more interested in electronic do-dads than automobiles and cars that are so computer integrated that it takes a programming degree to change anything. But then that argument has been around forever too or at least ever since electronic fuel injection replaced carburetors and solid state ignition replaced points.

I think the real problem with the car scene is the Vapes.

Oh I wouldn't hang with that crowd either but it is still their thing.

The same sort of info is still available on the internet but you have to wade through piles of shit to find and get to it. I am not at all surprised that so many get wrong info when any and every person that thinks they know something can pass on their "knowledge". Hell, I have given bad info myself which I truly believed to be right at the time. At least with the hard copy magazines the info had to pass through at least a couple of experts before it was published. Not to say some crap didn't still make it through though.

Exactly. Has to be self-directed.

I have most of the old SCC mags -- fun to sift back through and see what was what back then.

I think a lot of the "built not bought" bullcrap comes from the people who stance the fuck out of their car and think they're bad shit when they roll around the neighborhood "hardparked" everywhere.

But then you have something like... "built like shit to ruin what you bought". Go ahead harparkers, unite!

You know what, you're right, let them unite. They'll just make my car look that much better.

All this "built not bought" "hardparked" "stancenation" crap, even the widebodies, are a phase. And with every phase, they will go out of style at some point.

Yep.

Build your car for yourself, not for anyone else. It's your car, not theirs. Don't let some fans or followers decide what you can and cannot do with your car.

If you lose precious followers because they don't like your car anymore, they're not people you want following you.

The hobby is doing just great. If others' opinions hurt your feelings, you should into politics. I can name at least one candidate who's thin-skinned and yet wildly successful.

Among other things, I respect knowledge, skill, hard work, and accomplishment. Somebody who does their own work earns some respect from me for that. Somebody who has others do all their work does not earn that respect. Perhaps they can earn respect in other ways.

Myself? I don't change my own fluid because I hate dealing with fluids. Total pain in the ass and too messy, plus I'll have to dispose of things, but I am capable of doing the work. When I buy upgrades, I do it myself because that's part of the fun. For instance, I installed my own oil cooler. On jacks in my garage. Someday I'll get a lift.

I don't disrespect people who get others to do the work. I simply don't give them respect for the work they didn't do. I can also connect better with people who do work on their cars.
